How to Do Box Braids on Short Natural Hair
In this box braids tutorial, I’m going to show you how to do box braids on short natural hair. Let’s get started!
Best castor oil!
Tools and materials:
- Braiding hair
- Hair gel
- Castor oil
- Edge brush
Here’s the before shot of my short, 4C natural hair.
And here are the long box braids with beads we’re achieving! Let’s get started!
1. Section your hair into squares
Section your hair into squares. I was going for squares but ended up with circles and other shapes, but that’s okay.
2. Apply castor oil
Apply castor oil to your roots with your fingers.
3. Criss-cross two strands of the braiding hair
Grab two strands of hair and lock them together so they’re intertwined and in a crisscross shape.
4. Twist your hair around one of the strands
To apply it to your hair, twist one of the strands around your hair so that you have three strands remaining to make a three-part braid.
5. Braid as normal
Braid the three strands down, making sure that your real hair is tucked in nicely into the braiding hair.
It should be strong enough that it won’t come off no matter how much you pull. This would be easier if you add some kind of gel to it in the beginning, but I didn’t.
6. Lay your edges using gel
When you finish everything, use hair gel to make sure your edges are laid and look presentable at the front.
7. Add hair accessories
Afterward, add hair accessories. I added these little gold gems because it takes away from the messed-up braids and they’re so cute.
