Five Ways to Wear One Button-Down Dress

If you're trying to keep a capsule wardrobe or just trying to keep your clothing budget in check, shopping for pieces that can be worn several different ways is the path for you. Take some fresh eyes to your closet and you may find already have some versatile pieces but just didn't know how to wear them in different ways.

One piece that works really well for this is a sleeveless button-down dress.

I found one at a thrift store so I could try it out without too much investment. It's a little big on me, but I figure it will work well with sweaters during the winter, and it's a nice dark green fall/winter color.

So if you're looking to get more wear out of fewer items of clothing, here are five ways to wear one button-down dress.

With a Long Sleeve T-Shirt and Layered Necklaces

A long-sleeved t-shirt is such a handy item to have in your closet. It's perfect for between seasons when it's cool but not cold out and you can layer it over and under things. For this look, I layered it under the button-down dress. Because the dress is sleeveless, it's perfect for layering items with short or long sleeves underneath. I added a belt to not only accessorize but nip in the waist a bit. If your button-down dress already has a defined waistline, all the better for giving some shape.

With a Short Sleeve T-Shirt

A short-sleeved t-shirt gives your button-down dress a casual, playful look. You can also layer a jacket or sweater over this look for more interest and some warmth. This t-shirt is actually a mini-dress, so I could open up all the buttons and wear the button-down dress as a long vest-style duster as well.

With a Long Sleeve Button-Down Shirt

Give your dress a more formal look with a long-sleeve button-down shirt. This look is good for wearing to work, and you can play with the neckline by accessorizing with a scarf tie that almost leans into academia style.

With a Sweater Over or Under

I'm always looking for ways to jazz up a basic crew-neck sweater in winter. This button-down dress can be worn over or under a sweater so that it's seen just as a skirt or a whole outfit. There aren't many clothing items that can be layered over a sweater and still look sleek – trust me, I've tried!

As a Duster Over a Dress

This is one of my favorite ways to wear a button-down dress. Open it up and wear it over another dress and it works like a duster vest or light jacket. This also works really well with button-down dresses with sleeves that limit how much you can layer underneath. Plus, it gives you great dramatic flow as you walk into a room!

So now that you know five ways to style one button-down dress, will you be adding one to your wardrobe?
