3 Ways to Wear a Wrap Dress

There was never a more versatile dress than the wrap dress. The style, hallmarked by a front closure formed by wrapping one side across the other and fastened at the side or tied at the back, can work on diverse body types. With its adjustable waist tie and figure-hugging silhouette, the wrap dress accentuates curves while providing a universally flattering fit.

It seamlessly transitions from day to night, making it suitable for various occasions. Its longevity and versatility make it a sustainable choice,

The wrap-over neckline originated in robes of the Orient, influenced the Kimono style and gained popularity in Europe and the U.S. in the early 1900s. They were worn as house dresses in the 1920s and later adapted into daywear in the 1930s and 40s.

But it was fashion designer Diane von Fürstenberg who made the wrap dress her signature silhouette, creating them in body-skimming jersey knits, bold, colorful prints and lengths from mini to midi to maxi.

The design became a symbol of women's liberation in the 1970s and experienced renewed popularity when von Fürstenberg reintroduced her wrap dress in 1997.

Now, the designer has done it again. In March, she released an affordable line of wrap dresses and other wardrobe and home essentials designed with her granddaughter Talita as a collaboration for Target and in celebration of the dress's 50th anniversary on the fashion front. Many of the clothing items instantly sold out online, but you may be lucky enough to still find some pieces in stores. Other ways to shop for DVF dresses are on her website and on resell sites.

While the wrap dress is known for its body-wrapping look, there are different ways to wear it. Here are some ideas for creative looks with the wrap dress.

Wrap Dress with a Tank top

There's no question the wrap dress is sexy with its wrap deep-V neckline; if you prefer a more modest version, a tank top underneath adds more coverage and a layer of interest. This may tone down the sex appeal for work attire, and you can also take off the tank when transitioning to a night out. Try a tank top with a lace neckline, a contrasting color or a complementary print for even more visual appeal.

Wrap Dress as a Duster

Open up the wrap dress, and you will have a long duster that can be worn as a light sweater. Simply tie the wrap ties on each side in a knot and let them hang. This is a great option to wear over a sheath dress, a t-shirt and jeans or even a swimsuit cover-up to add a pop of color and print and create a dramatic flow when you walk into a room.

Wrap Dress with a Skirt Over

Create a whole new look for your wrap dress by layering a skirt over it and wearing it as a blouse. Be sure to check that the skirt is longer than the dress and is in an A-line or full skirt cut so the dress doesn't appear bulky underneath. Simply tie the dress as usual and pop the skirt over. Depending on where the skirt falls on your waistline, either tuck the ties underneath or let them show like a belt.

Now that you know how to wear a wrap dress, which one will you try?
