Beginner Sewing Tips for Sewing a Straight Line
Are you new to sewing? If so, I've got some great tips for you. Let's get into it.
Tools and materials:
- Paper or sewing practice sheets
- Sewing machine
When I first started sewing, I practiced my stitches on pieces of paper. I would draw lines on regular copy paper and then sew along them.
You can do this too or, if you’re feeling fancy, you can print off some sewing practice sheets. I found these ones on Pinterest.
After printing out your sewing practice sheets, set up your sewing machine. I’m doing a straight stitch and a 2 stitch length.
Next, thread your sewing machine as you normally would.
Then, lift your presser foot and place your practice sheet under the needle.
Make sure the line you’re sewing aligns with the little notch that’s in the foot.
This is how things should look after you’ve sewn one line:
You’ll improve with practice so keep going!
Note that curve stitches are more challenging. But, again, practice makes perfect.

Thank you, what a great idea!! Also fabulous to get a new sewer over those "too-scared-to-try" jitters!! Followed you on tiktok too
Just realize that sewing on paper will dull your sewing needle as much as using your fabric scissors to cut paper. Put a new needle on your machine to begin sewing fabric!
