How to Finish an Invisible Zipper in 2 Super Simple Steps
Today, I'm going to show you how to finish an invisible zipper. I learned this special technique for finishing the end of an invisible zipper from a friend who worked in a sewing factory.
Once you’ve gone to the trouble of sewing in an invisible zipper, it’s worthwhile going one step further to ensure the bottom end of the zipper is well-concealed as well.
You will need a sewing machine with a zipper foot for this technique, but it’s an easy trick and the results are great. So, let’s get started!
Tools and materials:
- Clothing with an invisible zipper
- Sewing pins
- Thread
- Sewing machine with zipper foot
1. Pin the seam below the invisible zipper
Pin the seam below the zipper, pulling the tail of the zipper out of the way.
2. Sew the seam below the invisible zipper
With a zipper foot, stitch the seam with a regular seam allowance, starting at the bottom of the seam.
Now, this is where the magic happens. When you get to where your seam meets the seam allowance, do not try meeting the stitching on the zipper.
Instead, aim to sew just 1-2 millimeters (0.08 inches) in front of those stitches, and stop your seam when you are just a couple of stitches up from the bottom of the zipper.
Here you can see that my new seam ends just next to the bottom of the zipper stitches. Then turn your fabric to the right side and iron the bottom end of the zipper seam.
You can see how it lays nice and flat, and the end of the zipper is well-hidden.
