If you’ve ever wondered how to do a lettuce hem when sewing, here I’m going to show you.

I’m using an overlock machine, but you can use a regular sewing machine.

Also, something to note is that you can only get a lettuce hem when working with stretchy fabric.

Tools and materials:

  • Sewing machine
  • Fabric
Selecting setting

1. Put on correct setting

Start by putting your overlock machine on the rolled hem setting.

A rolled hem also only requires three spools, so you can remove the fourth one if you have it on.

Then, change the tension level to 2.

Selecting setting

Adjust the lower looper to give it more tension so that we can get a rolled hem.

Selecting setting

Whatever thread you have in your upper looper will be the primary color of your rolled hem.

2. Create rolled hem

Pull your fabric tight as you sew, as this will increase the tension and give you more waves in the fabric.

This is a really gorgeous technique, and you can have a go at creating cute little loungewear sets like this one.

Give this sewing method a go for yourself and see what you think.

Remember that practice makes perfect, so don’t give up on it if you don’t get it right straight away!
