Tools and materials:
- Pattern paper
- Scissors
- Pencil
- Ruler
- Plaid fabric
- Straight pins
- Tailor’s chalk
- Interfacing fabric
- Sewing machine
- Thread
1. Make your DIY beret pattern
Cut out a semi-circle with a 15 cm (5.9”) radius. Also make a bow shape to match, that is 5 cm (1.97”) width all around.
2. Cut out main fabric piece
Using your tailor’s chalk, start by tracing the semi-circle on the folded fabric, with the fold matched up with the straight part of the semi-circle, and mark with pins. Then cut.
You should end up with a circle, like this:
3. Cut out second fabric piece
Again, start by tracing the bow shape onto the folded fabric, with the flat ends matched up with the folded part of the fabric.
Use pins to secure the doubled fabric. Then cut.
You should end up with an “o” piece, like this:
4. Repeat with interfacing
Create the same two pieces using interfacing fabric. Use the same process as above.
5. Line up all pieces and sew
Stack your fabrics in the following order: interfacing “o” shape, interfacing circle, main fabric circle, main fabric “o” shape.
Then, sew around the perimeter, with about a 1” seam allowance.
6. Prepare a strip
Cut out a strip from the main fabric that is 4 cm by 60 cm (1.57” x 23.62”).
Then attach it to the raw edge of the “o” shape, pinning it all the way around. Then sew.
7. Fold and sew
Fold down the inner edge of this strip (see video 2:40 - 2:50).
