In today’s tutorial, we are making the most powerful DIY hair growth oil I’ve ever made. Once you learn how to make hair growth oil, you’ll never have to look up home remedies for hair growth ever again.

We’re going to be using the double boiler method, so grab your pot, and let’s get started.

Tools and materials:

  • Double boiler pot
  • Avocado oil
  • Rosemary
  • Moringa powder
  • Measuring tools
  • Strainer
  • Container
  • Spray bottle
  • Leave-in conditioner
  • Oil applicator

Oil for hair growth recipe

DIY hair growth oil with avocado oil

1. Add avocado oil

Pour ½ cup of avocado oil into the pot. Avocado oil is going to be the base for our homemade hair growth oil. You can use whatever oil you have if you don’t have avocado oil, but this is my favorite.

If you’re doing this for the first time or you’re unsure about the oil, use only ¼ cup. Avocado oil penetrates the hair shaft so much easier than other oils and it makes my hair feel so soft like a moisturizer.

For an alternative, see my previous hair growth oil recipe, which uses olive oil and castor oil.

2. Add rosemary

Dry rosemary is just as effective as fresh rosemary and has a much longer shelf life so you don’t have to worry about mold. Add 1½ tablespoons of rosemary.

Sometimes I like to use pure homemade rosemary oil on my hair and scalp, as it's so effective. See my recipe for rosemary oil for hair here.

Homemade hair growth oil with moringa powder

3. Add moringa powder

Add 1 tablespoon of moringa powder. Moringa is a superfood and has so many different vitamins and benefits for your hair and your scalp while being extremely nourishing.

Also, note that ingesting any of these ingredients is also extremely beneficial for hair growth.

Heating the ingredients in a double boiler

4. Heat the water

Heat the water in your pot, not too hot that it’s boiling but hot enough to extract all the nutrients without burning or denaturing any of the products. Mix occasionally for ten minutes.

Letting the DIY hair growth oil sit overnight

5. Let it sit overnight

Cover the mixture so nothing can fall in or contaminate it and let it sit overnight. Come back after 24 hours.

Straining the DIY hair growth oil

6. Strain into a container

Mix everything up in case any of the ingredients have separated, then use a strainer to pour it into a container.

The good thing about this oil is that since everything is dry, it’s going to last much longer than if you had used fresh ingredients.

Adding additional oils

7. Finish by adding additional oils

Add a tablespoon of castor oil, 10 drops of peppermint oil, and rosemary essential oil.

Rosemary isn’t necessary since we already have some rosemary, but I like to get as many powerful benefits as I can because it’s one of the most heavily researched and most effective hair growth oils out there.

How to apply the DIY hair growth oil

Dampening hair with a spray bottle

1. Dampen your hair

Most days, I like to go in on slightly damp hair, so I’m using a spray bottle to wet my hair. You don’t want it to be soaking wet, just damp enough to absorb what you put on it.

If your hair is dry, the oil just locks in the dryness and sits on top of the hair.

Massaging the scalp

Massage your scalp to let the water penetrate the hair shaft.

Applying a leave-in conditioner

2. Apply a leave-in moisturizer

To apply my leave-in, I start with the ends of my hair as they’re the oldest and driest parts of the hair, and taking care of them really helps you maintain hair growth.

This is a powerful combo because the DIY hair growth oil helps boost hair growth, but if your hair habits are bad and your hair is constantly breaking off and getting damaged, your hair might just get shorter or look bad.

Working the leave-in conditioner into the hair

After working the product into the ends, focus it closer to the scalp and the actual hair shaft. Just don’t put it on your scalp as that can clog your follicles and stunt your hair growth.

3. Apply the oil

Put a couple of drops of the oil in between every part of the front and the back of your hair using an applicator. This oil has so many vitamins and nutrients that absorb easily into the hair and make it feel so soft.

If you have a naturally oily scalp or you feel like the amount of oil is too much to wear out, you can use it as a pre-poo hot oil treatment by applying it 30-40 minutes or even the night before washing your hair and you’ll still get all of the amazing benefits.

Massaging the oil into the scalp

4. Massage the oil into the scalp

Scalp massage is extremely essential to improve the efficacy of any oil you use. Scalp massages are amazing for boosting hair growth and they work the product further into your scalp.

For more details on massage technique, see my previous tutorial on scalp massage for hair growth.

Here’s what my ends look like after applying the oil: nice, curly, and shiny. Besides sealing in moisture, the oil allows for healthy and thick hair growth which equals longer, healthier hair.
