I started making my own makeup after learning about the vast amounts of chemical ingredients used in conventional cosmetic products.

I have a healthier recipe to make your own DIY mascara that’s better for your body.

Just a handful of the many toxic ingredients found in store-bought mascara include PFAs, parabens, synthetic dyes, aluminum powder, propylene glycol, synthetic fragrances and even tar from coal.

Tools and materials:

  • Activated charcoal
  • Bentonite clay
  • Glycerin
  • Aloe vera
  • Beeswax pellets
  • Heat-proof bowl
  • Measuring spoons
  • Small saucepan
  • Water
  • Stovetop
  • Metal spoon
  • Rosemary essential oil (optional)
  • Empty mascara tube and brush
  • Small metal funnel
Adding activated charcoal

1. Add activated charcoal

Add a ½ teaspoon of activated charcoal to a bowl. This is our colorant and the amount can be adjusted according to your color preference.

To make a brown mascara, just substitute half of the charcoal for cacao powder. Spirulina can be swapped in as a replacement for green/blue mascara.

2. Add bentonite clay

Add a ¼ teaspoon of bentonite clay to the bowl. This ingredient will help prevent the mascara from smudging.

3. Add glycerin and aloe vera

Add an ⅛ of a teaspoon of glycerin and a ¼ teaspoon of aloe vera to the mixture.

Adding aloe vera

If the mixture is too thin, add more clay or beeswax.

4. Add beeswax

Gradually add about an ⅛ of a teaspoon of beeswax pellets to the mixture.

5. Make a double boiler

Add water to a small saucepan and heat it on the stove over medium heat to create a double boiler. Bring the water to a boil.

6. Stir over heat

Sit your heat-safe bowl with the ingredients over the double boiler and stir until the beeswax pellets melt.

7. Cool and add rosemary essential oil

Remove the bowl from the heat source and allow the mixture to cool before adding 1-2 drops of rosemary oil.

Rosemary oil provides lash growth benefits, but omit it if you have particularly sensitive eyes.

Make sure, when applying the mascara, that the oil doesn’t get in your eyes. Stir to combine.

Mixing

The texture of the mascara should be smooth. If it isn’t, just add a little more glycerin.

8. Transfer

Transfer the mascara into an empty mascara tube with a small, metal funnel. Store in a cool, dry place.

9. Apply

If curling your lashes, do so before applying this mascara so your lashes don’t clump.

DIY mascara

Apply your mascara as you normally would, making sure none touches your eyes.

If any mascara makes it into your eyes or you experience any irritation, wash it off immediately, rinsing your eyes under running water.

Applying DIY mascara

To remove, loosen the mascara with a little coconut oil and gently rub it away with a washcloth soaked in warm water.
