This Halloween, I’m making DIY Squid Game costumes based on the wildly popular Netflix show. Last week, I showed you how to make a DIY Squid Game tracksuit, which the players wear. This week, I’m showing you how to make a DIY red suit Squid Game Costume, which is what the guards wear.

(I also did another tutorial on How to Make a DIY Squid Game VIP Mask.)

The most challenging part of this costume is the mask, which is the only real DIY aspect of this costume, so that’s what I’ll be focusing on. Other than the mask, it’s a super-easy costume to put together with items from the thrift store and so comfy to wear. Let’s get started!

Tools and materials:

  • Red tracksuit with a hood
  • Black belt
  • Black gloves
  • Strainer
  • Black mask
  • Black spray paint
  • White paint
  • Paintbrush
  • Black felt
  • Wire cutters or tin snips
  • Hot glue gun
Cutting mesh from strainer with tin clippers

1. Cut the mesh out of a strainer

Cut the mesh out of a strainer with wire cutters or tin clippers. I found that tin clippers worked best. You may also want to trim and bend it into more of an oval shape to fit your face. Be careful, as the cut mesh is sharp.

2. Cover the edges with black felt

As the edges are so sharp, I covered them with black felt. I cut strips of the felt and hot glued them to the sides of the mask. This also finishes the edges nicely.

3. Attach the mesh to the black mask

Next, I attached the mesh to this black Halloween mask that I picked up from the dollar store.

Gluing the mesh to the black mask

Attach the mesh using pieces of black felt. I did this at four different points to secure it in place; hot gluing the felt pieces to the mask.

4. Paint the mask

Next, I spray-painted the mesh black. After waiting for that to dry, I used white paint to make the shape on the front.

There are three tiers of guards in Squid Game: squares (managers), circles (workers), and triangles (armed guards). You can choose which you’d like to be and paint the corresponding shape. I chose square.

That’s it! Just put on your red hoodie and sweatpants, black gloves, black belt, and mask, and your Squid Game costume is ready to go. These Squid Game characters are so easy to create costumes for and it’s super-comfy to be in a tracksuit all night.

To make these DIY Squid Game costumes even more effective, you might want to make this a group costume with other people, mixing players and guards, or different tiers of guards.
