I love how powerful I feel wearing a little black dress. So I was delighted when I thrifted this lace Stevie Nicks shawl and a vintage floral muumuu.

Tools and materials:

  • Lace shawl
  • Floral muumuu
  • Pins
  • Scissors
  • Needle and thread
  • Lace edging
  • Sewing machine
Shawl to LBD

1. Shawl to LBD

The shawl fit well but I wanted a high neckline dress.

All I had to do was sew up the front opening. I turned it inside out and sewed it with a straight stitch.

That was an easy upcycle!

Muumuu

2. Muumuu

The muumuu was more complicated. It was too big and too long. I wanted to make it into a cute mini dress.

Shortening

3. Shorten

I cut off the top at the level I wanted the new neckline.

Shortening

I also took some inches off the side seams and re-sewed them.

Straps

4. Straps

I cut two curved straps from the sleeves, sewed them together with the right sides facing and turned them right side out.

I turned in the top edge of the dress and attached the straps at the front and back.

Neckline

5. Neckline

I wanted to make the square neckline more feminine, so I gathered the center with a few stitches to make a sweetheart shape.

Sewing

Then I added a strip of pink lace from my stash.

I’m obsessed with how these two came out!

They both fit perfectly and are everything I wanted them to be.
