How to Make a Sexy Valentine’s Day Dress in Just 5 Simple Steps
In this tutorial, I'll show you how to make a sexy Valentine’s Day outfit that's super-cute and so simple to make. It's the perfect Valentine's dress to wear out or for staying at home being romantic!
Here’s how to make a DIY Valentine’s outfit in under an hour.
Tools and materials:
- 2 Yards stretchy knit fabric
- Well-fitting skirt or dress to use as a template
- Scissors
- Pins
- Sewing machine
- Tailor’s chalk or marking pen
When working with stretchy fabric, make sure you know which side is the good or right side that will be visible. Mark the wrong side so you know which side needs to show.
You may want to use a non-fraying or self-finished fabric for this project.
1. Cut out the skirt
Fold the stretchy fabric in half with the right sides inside. Fold the dress or the skirt in half and lay the fold of the skirt on the fold of the fabric.
Cut around your template, leaving a ½-inch seam allowance. That will be your skirt front. Repeat this technique to make the back of the skirt.
2. Sew the seams and hem
Open up both pieces of fabric and lay them so their right sides are together. Pin the side seams together. Sew them using a straight stitch.
On one side seam, cut a small slit. Fold the fabric over once towards the wrong side and pin in place. Sew the slit hem.
Fold the bottom of the skirt over once. Pin in place. Sew the hem down.
3. Make the top of the dress
Measure a piece of fabric that is at least 1 yard long by 30 to 34 inches in width.
Fold the skirt in half so the side seams are touching. Find the center point of the skirt. Mark the center point.
Fold the fabric strip in half to find the center point.
Mark this center point.
Pin these two points together. Sew them using a straight stitch from the center point about 4 inches out on either side of the front for a total of 8-9 inches to secure the front.
4. Make the belt (optional)
Cut a piece of fabric that can go around your waist at least twice in length and about 10 inches in width. Fold the fabric in half.
5. Wear the dress
Pull up the ends of the top around your neck to tie as a halter.
Put the belt on, with the folded side at the top of your waist, tying the back with a beautiful bow.
