A little black dress is regarded as the most quintessential fashion item of all time. It really is the perfect dress to wear if you want to look sultry and sexy. Today, I am going to show you how to make a little black dress of your own, so you too can own this sassy number! The process is fairly simple and, of course, fun! I used velvet fabric for this little black dress tutorial, but you can choose any stretch fabric you like. Ready? Let’s start!

Tools and materials:

  • Stretch fabric
  • Top
  • Skirt
  • Scissors
  • Thread
  • Sewing machine

Make the pattern

Fold the fabric in half, twice. Then, using a top that fits well, trace the top on the fabric, making sure it’s on the fold with the fabric’s fold. You’ll be tracing the back neckline, shoulder seam, armhole, and side seam. When tracing, remember to use a ½ inch seam allowance on all the edges as mentioned above.

Choose your desired length for the dress and once you’re satisfied, cut out the pattern.

Sew a little black dress

Adjust the front neckline by cutting a deeper groove, as shown.

Make the sleeves

Fold your fabric in half, and twice, lay the sleeve part of your top on top, right on the fold.

Trace the sleeve part and cut. Again, remember to use a ½ inch seam allowance. I opted for a half sleeve look, but if you want your sleeves full-length, simply make the sleeve part longer- according to your arm measurements.

Assemble the little black dress

Pin the side seams of your sleeves, and stitch them together using a zigzag stitch. Remember to fold these right sides facing.

Now take both pieces of the dress, lay them right facing. Pin the shoulder and side seams and sew with a zigzag stitch, too.

Remember to trim the excess fabric accordingly, ensuring a nice finished and professional look.

Simple little black dress

To attach the sleeves to the armholes, start by turning the sleeve inside out. Then, matching the seams accordingly, place the sleeve inside of the armhole.

Then, pin the sleeves to the armhole of this DIY little black dress.

Sew all around the circumference with a zigzag stitch.

TIP-

As mentioned, be sure to trim the excess fabric carefully.

Hem the raw edges

Woohoo, you’re almost done! Now, go ahead and hem the neckline, both sleeves, and the bottom of the dress. To hem this little black dress, all you do is fold the fabric over by ½ an inch, pin it, and sew on the fabric’s right side edge. I used a twin needle for this step.

TIP-

Before you hem the bottom of the dress, remember to cut it or adjust it to your desired length.
