If you’ve been looking for easy-to-apply eyeliner for beginners, here’s a step-by-step way to quickly, easily, and successfully applying eyeliner. With the right tools and a couple of tricks up your sleeve, you can achieve a smooth and straight line.

Perfect for those of us over 40 but also for any age! These are basic eyeliner tips: no wings or weirdness.

Tools and materials:

  • Eyeliner pencil
  • Eyeliner brush: ultra-fine or angled
  • Eyelid primer
  • Eyeshadow color to match the eyeliner pencil
  • Sharpener
  • Cotton buds
Sharpening the eye pencil

1. Sharpen the pencil

Make sure to sharpen your eyeliner pencil so the line you draw is crisp. Using a dull eyeliner pencil does not work as well.

Priming the eyelid

2. Prime the eyelid

Apply primer to your mobile eyelid (the part that moves) to keep eye makeup and eyeliner on all day.

Applying eyeliner to the eye inner corner

3. Apply eyeliner pencil

I like using waterproof eyeliner because it stays on without budging. It’s always a good idea to warm up the eyeliner by rubbing it for a few seconds on your hand, so it glides on.

Start with the inner corner of the eye, as close to the lash line as possible. I like to do little dashes and connect them, rather than one long line.

How to do basic eyeliner

Keep the line very thin at the inner corner of the eye. I go thicker towards the outside.

Using eyeshadow as eyeliner

4. Add eyeshadow

I’m using gray eyeliner, so I use gray eyeshadow. Dip the eyeliner brush into the matching eyeshadow and knock off any excess.

Applying eyeshadow with an eyeliner brush

Apply the shadow directly to where you put the eyeliner. Gently smudge the brush into the eyeliner, making it soft and smooth.

This trick also helps make your eyeliner last longer and stops it from creasing and smudging all over your face. Keep applying it until the eyeliner looks nice and straight.

Tightlining the eye

5. Enhance the liner

This might wig some of you out but the tightline trick really enhances the eyeliner! Tightline is when you lift up the eye and apply the eyeliner pencil only to the underside of the upper eyelid on the pink part. It deepens the eyeliner and really defines the eye.

Applying eyeliner to the lower lash line

6. Lower eyelid eyeliner

This step is optional. Gently make short dashes on the lower lash line, right at the base of the lower lashes from the outside to about halfway or ¾’s of the way.

Then, use whatever is left on the eyeliner brush and go right over the eyeliner pencil. Smudge it until it looks nice and soft.

Using a cotton bud to clean up the eyeliner

7. Finishing touches

If you need to clean up any shadow, use a cotton bud. You can also use a cotton bud on the outside of the eye to pull up the eyeliner to wing it a bit or flick it upwards.

Finishing the eye with a coat of mascara

Finish with mascara and you’re good to go!
