Hey guys, today I’m going to show you how to make extra-large scrunchies. I feel like scrunchies have become super popular recently, especially oversized silk scrunchies like these ones.

DIY giant scrunchies are really easy to make, so let’s jump right into it.

Tools and materials:

  • Paper
  • Ruler
  • Marker
  • Pins
  • Scissors
  • Sewing machine
  • Silk or satin fabric
  • Elastic
Drawing the scrunchie pattern on paper

1. Draw the scrunchie pattern

Start by measuring a rectangle 100-110cm (39-43 inches) by 23-24cm (9-9.4 inches) on paper to make the giant scrunchie pattern.

Pins for paper and fabric

2. Pin the pattern to the fabric

Pin the paper pattern to the fabric along the edges.

Measuring a seam allowance before cutting

3. Cut out the fabric

Cut around the pattern, leaving a 1cm (0.4 inches) seam allowance on the longer sides. You don’t need to leave a seam allowance on the shorter sides.

Measuring a piece of elastic

4. Cut the elastic

Cut a piece of elastic 21-22cm (8.3-8.7 inches) long.

Folding the fabric lengthways

5. Fold and sew

Fold the fabric in half lengthways, right sides together. Then, sew along that length.

Turning the fabric right side out

6. Turn the fabric

Turn the fabric right side out again.

Positioning the elastic in the fabric tunnel

7. Position and sew the fabric

Feed the elastic through the tunnel of fabric and stitch the ends together.

Prepping the fabric ready to sew

8. Stitch the fabric ends together

Take the ends of the fabric, tuck one into the other, then fold the outside end in slightly to hide the raw edge. Pin, then sew.

Here’s the finished result! This was so easy to make and I love that this oversized silk scrunchie is such a statement. The silky material looks so good all scrunched up like that, right?

I like wearing mine in a half-up hairstyle like this, so the size of the scrunchie looks even more giant!
