In this tutorial, I'll show you the best way to apply eye makeup for mature women. Eyes are the window to the soul and eye makeup helps accentuate your eyes.

As we get older, we develop darkness, discoloration, and fading all at the same time. When we use the right eye makeup with the right technique, we can bring back all that beauty in our eyes. Here’s how to do it!

I'm using products by Look Fabulous Forever, but you can recreate the same look with your own makeup.

Tools and materials:

  • Eye primer
  • Tapered brush
  • Spoolie
  • Eyeshadow brush
  • Blending brush
  • Pencil or angled or smudge brush
  • Eyelash curler
  • Highlighter
  • Taupe eyeshadow
  • Light-colored eyeshadow
  • Charcoal shadow
  • Eyebrow paint or eyebrow gel
Applying eye primer to mature eyes

1. Apply eye primer

The first step is to lightly apply eye primer on the eyelids. This helps to smooth out the lid area and removes any discoloration and darkness. It also helps the eyeshadow adhere better to the eyelid.

Use a tapered brush to smooth the primer on the skin.

Measuring eyebrows with a makeup brush

2. Fix brows

Brows are essential for expression and facial symmetry. Unfortunately, as we age, brows can lose their shape, density, and length. First, measure your brows.

The best eye makeup for over 60

Eyebrow length should line up with the base of your nose at the beginning and in a diagonal line from your nose to your temple. Use a brush to measure the distance.

Using a spoolie brush to neaten eyebrows

Once you’ve determined the best shape, run a spoolie over the brows to rein in any wiry or scraggly hairs and to move all the eyebrow hairs in a nice neat shape.

Applying eyebrow paint to fill in brows

Then apply eyebrow paint or gel in short feathery strokes. This product is more realistic looking than eyebrow pencil and less smudgy than shadow.

Run the spoolie one more time to finish up the brows.

Applying highlighter just below the eyebrow

3. Apply highlighter

Gently apply the highlighter just below the eyebrows and below the outer eye to brighten the eye area and make those areas pop.

Pat the highlighter to soften any edges.

Applying eyeshadow to mature eyes

4. Apply eyeshadow

First, apply a taupe eye shadow using the eyeshadow brush in the eyelid crease. Start at the inside of the eye and work outward, placing a bit at the outside eye corner.

Blend with the fluffy or domed blending brush using a circular motion to soften any edges. Blending helps distribute the color evenly.

Applying a lighter eyeshadow to the inner eye

Now, apply a lighter color from the inner corner of the eye to the middle. Blend outward to the outer eye. If you’re using a cream shadow, you can use your fingers as the product is stickier than powder shadow.

Applying eyeliner for mature eyes

5. Apply soft eyeliner

Heavy mascara and eyeliner are aging. Here’s how to darken the base of the lashes easily without any heavy gloopiness.

Use a smudge, pencil, or angled brush that has short hairs and is relatively stiff. Dip the brush into charcoal shadow, tap off any excess, and gently press into the base of your lashes in several short strokes.

This is a much softer look than eye pencil and gives the same effect of depth without the heaviness. You can also do this on the lower lashes.

Using an eyelash curler on older eyes

Next, use an eyelash curler. Trap the upper lashes between the pads and press the curler. You can do this a few times to pump up the volume of your lashes. This helps to immediately open up the eye.

6. Apply mascara

Last, apply mascara. The idea is to thicken and lengthen the lashes without clumping. Move the mascara wand upward on the bottom of your lashes first, then downward on the tops of your lashes, and gently from side to side.

You can also put mascara on your bottom lashes to really open the eye.
