I love to have a lash line, so my lashes look thinner, but my eyelids now that I’m 69 are quite crepey and quite lined. So I can’t get that nice sharp effect that I’d like to get, say with a liquid liner or a gel liner, and I’ve basically stopped using them.

Here I want to show you how to do eyeliner for mature eyes when you have crepey eyelids like mine and want to make your lashes look thicker.

I'm using makeup from Look Fabulous Forever, but you could replicate the same techniques with your own makeup.

Tools and materials:

  • Brow pencil
  • Eye primer
  • Eyeshadows
  • Makeup brushes
  • Eyelash curler
  • Mascara
Prepping the brows and eye area

1. Prep your eyes

The starting point is obviously to create that basic makeup that you want to create on your eyes. Start by defining your brows and adding an eye primer to keep your eye makeup in place for longer.

Blending eyeshadows on the eyelid

2. Apply eyeshadow

Then go with a couple of eyeshadows. On your lids, use a pale gray, and above your lids in the socket line, you want to go for a taupe color. Then blend them together really well.

Defining the lower lash line with eyeshadow

3. Define the lower lash line

To add the lash line, take a wedge brush and apply an aubergine purple. This is a lovely color if you’re cool-toned like me, and it just injects a little bit of drama and interest into the eye makeup.

Pick up some shadow with the brush and start by putting some of it under your eyes, so you’re just adding some color where your lower lashes are. Then, carry that line up and out to the side.

Adding a slight wing allows you to slightly change the shape of your eyes and make them appear less round and more almond-shaped, which I think is more attractive.

Defining the upper lash line with eyeshadow

4. Define the upper lash line

Next, take the brush and push it down into your upper lashline.

The great thing about using powder instead of gel or liquid liner is that you don’t have to be particularly precise. You are actually looking to achieve quite a smudgy effect, and that means you really don’t have to worry too much about precision.

Using an eyelash curler on lashes

5. Curls lashes and apply mascara

To finish off, I’m going to curl my lashes with the curlers and then apply some mascara. Mascara obviously thickens your lashes and makes them look more dramatic, and this just completes the look.

Check over to see that your makeup looks even on both sides, and then you’re done!

I love being inspired by women of a certain age (like me) who still wear makeup and like to look their best despite what nature throws our way! Beautifully done and explained!
