How to Wear a Pinafore Jumper

If you’re a fan of layering during the fall season, you might have a pinafore in your wardrobe. This cross between an apron and a dress was originally created to go over clothes to keep them clean. But the pinafore, sometimes called a jumper, has become a wardrobe must not only to look stylish but also for its versatility.

What is Pinafore?

Pinafores these days come in a few different silhouettes. They can have bibs like coveralls, v-necks. ruffled sleeves or suspender-style straps. The options are endless to wear separates over or under them. Don’t have a pinafore in your closet? Get shopping!

The great thing about the pinafore is you can style it in multiple ways to really stretch your wardrobe. Here are some ideas for how to wear a pinafore:

Pinafore with a long-sleeve t-shirt

I’m a huge fan of long sleeve t-shirts in the fall. You can layer them over a t-shirt and under a sweater, and they don’t get too hot for those days when the temperature is warm with a cool breeze. They also look perfect under a pinafore for a casual look. You can also add a belt as an accessory or cinch the waist a bit.

Pinafore with a blouse

Pinafores dress up easily with a pretty blouse underneath. Pick one with billowy sleeves and a pussy-bow neckline, and you’ll have a feminine look for date nights. Don’t forget to play with fun color combinations as I did here. Who says pink isn’t a fall color?

Pinafore with a sweater over/under

There’s no question that a pinafore is a perfect transitional wardrobe item for between seasons.  When it gets colder outside, you can go from wearing a t-shirt under them to a sweater under them, and you can also put a sweater over them to just show the skirt part. It’s like having another separate in your wardrobe to style up!

Pinafore over another dress

The ultimate layering trick with a pinafore is to put them on over another dress. You can wear it will almost any style of dress – a shift dress, a shirt dress, a mini dress, a t-shirt dress. You can even play with the length. Pick a dress a little longer than your pinafore, and it can peek out like a ruffle trim. I have mine layered over a button-down shirt dress.

So now that you know how to wear a pinafore, which look will you try first?

Hi Jan, thanks for your questions. I got mine at JCrew a couple of years ago, but you can find a similar one by searching "corduroy pinafore jumper." Hope that helps!
