One Summer Dress Four Ways for Fall

Fall is here! There is a crisp breeze in the air and the leaves are turning their bonfire of colors. While it’s one of the prettiest times of the year, transitioning your wardrobe from hot to cool weather can sometimes prove to be a challenge. Some days it’s still warm and you want to keep wearing your light summertime dresses and other days it’s downright chilly and you’re reaching for a sweater.

So how do you keep your summer wardrobe going through fall? Sure, you can just throw on a jacket, but by adding layers, you get lots of fun and fashionable options to keep wearing that summer dress in multiple ways! Here’s how to style one summer dress four ways for fall.

Add a Sweater Vest

I love cozy knit sweater vests, especially the vintage grandpa styles and those that look lovingly hand-knit, like this one I got at a vintage market. They’ll keep your core nice and toasty when the weather has a slight chill while still allowing you to wear your favorite summer dresses on warm afternoons. Try pairing it with cowboy or lace-up boots to give it more of a fall look.

Put a Base Layer on First

Base layers are thin separates meant to be worn underneath clothes to keep you warm without adding bulk. You can pick a base layer from your favorite adventure wear brands such as Patagonia or this thermal scoop neck top I have from 32 Degrees Heat. The advantage of these is if you start to warm up and sweat in the afternoon heat, they’re made of moisture-wicking material to keep you dry. A light turtleneck will also give the same look. Try pairing it with some oxford shoes for a more grounded look.

Add Some Edge

Putting your favorite rocker t-shirt over your dress gives it an edgy look and provides a little extra warmth. Be sure to pick a T-shirt with a bit of wiggle room, not the fitted style. Tie it in a knot at the waist, or add a fun belt to give you some shape. If you’re headed out at night, don’t forget your moto jacket and combat boots!

Sweater Weather

When it’s really feeling cold, grab that classic crewneck or v-neck sweater and put it on over your dress. Add some necklaces for more interest. A cardigan sweater is another option. Not only can you see more of the dress, but you can also unbutton it if you start to feel too warm. Pair it with some ankle booties for autumnal vibes.

Now that you know how to wear your summer dress four ways for fall, which one will you try first?
