Follow my tutorial to learn how to turn a basic black purse into a designer rattan cane bag. You can make this DIY purse from a basic purse you pick up at a bargain store, or maybe you already have an old purse lying around that you can upstyle. This is a super-fast DIY purse project, so without delay, let’s get started!

Tools and materials:

  • Caning
  • X-ACTO knife
  • Glue and hot glue gun
Basic black purse

1. Start with a basic black purse

Pick up a very basic black purse on sale at your favorite discount store, or upstyle an old purse from your wardrobe. Make sure your basic black purse is lined.

Measuring a piece of caning

2. Add caning to your purse

Caning is very popular for outdoor furniture and home accessories, and it’s also great for making this designer purse. Cut a piece of caning to cover the center area of your purse, and then measure that piece of caning.

Tip: you can buy caning in sheets or rolls from Amazon, and you will get enough for several projects.

Drawing the shape on the purse

Now, use tailor’s chalk to draw the same shape onto the front center of your purse, making your drawing about 1 inch smaller in dimension than your piece of caning.

Cutting the leather

With an X-ACTO knife, cut out that square only from the top layer of purse fabric.

When you remove that square from the outside of your purse, you should be left with an envelope pocket, with the purse lining at the back. If there is any stuffing or padding in there, you can remove it.

Sliding in the piece of caning

Gently slide your piece of caning into the pocket at the front of your purse, making sure that it lays flat and snugly in the pocket.

Gluing the caning in place

Glue the caning in place with a hot glue gun, smoothing out the fabric over the caning as you go. The glue dries quickly, so do one side at a time, making sure it’s fully glued down and smooth before progressing to the next side.
