How to Sew a Makeup Bag Out of DIY Patchwork Denim Fabric

These patchwork denim DIY makeup bags are simple to make and a really cute way to keep your makeup together! This tutorial gives you all the steps to sew two makeup bags in two different sizes, to hold all of your makeup!

Tools and materials:

  • Paper
  • Ruler
  • Marker
  • Scissors
  • Two 9-inch zippers
  • Scrap denim fabric
  • Lining fabric
  • Thread
  • Sewing machine
  • Zipper foot

1. Make your makeup bag patterns

Tape pieces of paper together to get a 10 x 14-inch rectangle and draw out that rectangle on the paper.

Cut out the rectangle.

Measure, draw, and cut out another smaller rectangle, measuring 6½ x 10 inches.

2. Make your denim patchwork

Cut all your denim into rectangles, in a variety of different sizes, and lay them all out on your work surface. Organize these rectangles into piles with similar heights.

Now sew the piles of denim rectangles into long rows. Then, lay the rows out and trim the long edges so each row has nice, straight long edges.

Sew all the rows together into one large denim patchwork piece.

3. Cut out your denim makeup bags

Lay your 10 x 14-inch pattern piece on top of the denim patchwork and cut out that rectangle from the denim.

Fold the remaining denim patchwork and place your 6½ x 10-inch pattern piece with one long edge along the fold of your denim. Cut out that piece.

4. Sew your first denim makeup bag

Cut out a 10 x 14-inch rectangle from your lining fabric and place it on top of the matching denim rectangle, with wrong sides together.

Sew an overlock stitch around all four edges.

5. Attach the zipper

Pin one zipper to the top edge of one short side of the fabric.

Now, fold the other side of the fabric up to meet the zipper, and pin the other side of the zipper to the other side of the fabric.

Use the zipper foot on your sewing machine to straight stitch the zipper to the fabric.

6. Sew the side seams

Refold your fabric so that the zipper is right in the center of it, and pin along the open edges to hold it in place.

7. Make box corners

Flatten the corners and measure 1 inch in from each corner. Draw diagonal lines at the 1-inch mark for each corner.

Sew each corner on the diagonal line you just drew.

Trim the hanging threads and then snip off the excess fabric from the corners.

Turn your bag right-side out, push out the corners and tuck the zipper inside.

8. Sew your second makeup bag

Repeat steps 4 to 7 with your other piece of denim, for a smaller DIY denim patchwork makeup bag, but this time keep your zipper at the top in Step 6.
