The perfect winter lip balm recipe, homemade white chocolate mint lip balm is nourishing for dry lips and smells amazing.

This peppermint lip balm recipe is made with completely natural ingredients. It gets its chocolate scent from the raw cocoa butter (or cacao butter) in the recipe and just a hint of peppermint essential oil adds that lovely mint tingle.

DIY lip care has never smelled so good!

HOW TO MAKE LIP BALM AT HOME WITH NATURAL INGREDIENTS

Lip balm is one of my favorite beauty DIYs because it always turns out so wonderful! Yes, you can purchase natural and organic lip balm for inexpensive, but you can make it for even cheaper.

Plus, homemade lip balm can be customized however you like, so you can make the perfect tin (or tube) of amazing lip balm for you!

I love DIY lip balm as an inexpensive gift idea as well – think stocking stuffers, small teacher gifts or gifts for kids. Everyone loves lip balm, AM I RIGHT?

Plus, this white chocolate mint lip balm is perfect for the holiday season. I mean, who doesn’t love the mint and chocolate combo??

LIP BALM WITHOUT SHEA BUTTER

This natural lip balm recipe is different than lots of others you’ll find on the world wide web. It is made without shea butter or coconut oil. I do have a lip balm recipe with shea butter that I love just as much as this one, but I leave it out for this recipe so that the chocolate really comes through!

I love the combination of cocoa butter, jojoba oil, almond oil and beeswax in this DIY lip balm because it makes a luxurious feeling balm that is not too heavy on the beeswax (read: not waxy and stiff).

You will find you don’t need to apply all day every day because this lip balm works so well. A couple times a day, tops, and your lips will be silky smooth.

This chocolate mint lip balm is slightly harder than my traditional lip balm recipe, since cocoa butter is a harder oil than shea butter and it makes up a large portion of this recipe. But that doesn’t make it any less nourishing!!

Cocoa butter is an amazing moisturizer, and your lips are going to LOVE this homemade lip balm.

LIP BALM CONTAINERS

There are several options for lip balm containers that I like. For this recipe, I chose small metal lip balm tins instead of the typical plastic tubes.

I love that the tins are plastic free and zero-waste since they can easily be cleaned and reused again.

Plus the metal tins hold more than a tube, AND it’s so easy to apply this balm to other dry areas that are in need of extra moisture (like elbows, heels and cuticles).

I do use plastic tubes as well (like in this lip balm recipe), and this chocolate mint lip balm recipe can easily be adapted to either container.

TIP: The tins hold twice as much as the tubes, so adjust the recipe according to your container choice!

MEASURING BY WEIGHT VS VOLUME

I include this note about measuring ingredients in several of my recipes, but it warrants repeating. When using solid ingredients (like beeswax, cocoa butter and shea butter) it is difficult to achieve a consistent result when measuring by volume.

The chunks of cocoa butter I used may be bigger than yours, meaning the measurement by volume might be slightly different. When you measure by weight, that doesn’t matter and you get the exact right amount every time.

I absolutely recommend a kitchen scale for recipes like lip balm and lotion bars, and if you plan to make these regularly it will be well worth the minimal cost.

I understand many people are not able to measure by weight, so I’ve provided the recipe in both weight and volume measurements. Just know If you are measuring by volume (teaspoons), your results might vary slightly depending on your specific ingredients.

Luckily, this lip balm recipe is very forgiving and a slight variation will probably be unnoticeable.

COCOA BUTTER LIP BALM RECIPE – WHAT YOU’LL NEED

SUPPLIES

lip balm tins

Double boiler (or makeshift one like I do)

Mini whisk or spoon

Kitchen scale (optional, see note above on measuring)

INGREDIENTS

Beeswax

Cocoa butter* (I buy organic, cold pressed and unrefined, and also use it in my favorite hot chocolate)

Almond oil

Jojoba oil

Vitamin E

Essential oil

Ingredients

  • 0.2 oz (1 heaping tsp) beeswax

  • 0.5 oz (appx. 3 tsp) cocoa butter

  • 0.1 oz (1 tsp) almond oil

  • 0.1 oz (1 tsp) jojoba oil

  • 5 drops vitamin E

  • 10 drops peppermint essential

  • Optional: 10 drops chocolate truffle essential oil (to make it EXTRA chocolatey)

Instructions

  1. Measure beeswax and cocoa butter and put in the top of a double boiler
  2. Melt the cocoa butter and wax over low heat in your double boiler until completely combined
  3. Add the almond oil and jojoba oil and stir
  4. Remove from heat and add Vitamin E and essential oils
  5. Pour into lip balm tins (or tubes)
  6. Allow to cool completely (at least 30 minutes)

Notes

Recipe makes 3 metal tins of lip balm (or 5-6 plastic tubes)

I prefer to measure recipes with solid ingredients by weight instead of volume because it is much more accurate. I've provided estimates by volume since that is easiest for most people. However, if you have a kitchen scale, I suggest using the recipe by weight listed above.

HOW DO YOU MAKE LIP BALM WITHOUT BEESWAX?

I get this question every time I post a recipe with beeswax! I hear ya, my vegan friends, and am here to tell you it’s is so easy to make lip balm without beeswax, and it turns our great! You can substitute candelilla wax for beeswax and have great results.

Your final product will be slightly harder because candelilla wax is a little harder than beeswax. But combined with the cocoa butter in this recipe, it is a luscious and nourishing lip balm recipe without beeswax.

HOW LONG DOES DIY LIP BALM LAST?

You can expect your homemade lip balm to last for at least 6 months if stored properly. Make sure to keep your natural lip balm sealed and at room temperature.

Confession: I found some lip balms I made more than 3 years ago and decided to give them a try. They were still good! Maybe not quite as soft and definitely not as fragrant as when I first made them, but I was pleasantly surprised.

Like any homemade DIY product, your lip balm will be as good as the ingredients you put in it. So make sure your ingredients are fresh, and your lip balm will keep for a while.
