How do you clean gold-plated jewelry? Well, I’ve got just the tutorial for you.


My jewelry has a lot of brown spots and they’ve definitely seen better days. Perfume, natural oils, and sweat all affected my jewelry over time. I found it really discouraging and I was less eager to wear these pieces.


Fortunately, I found a great solution on how to clean gold-plated jewelry and I’m going to share it with you! Let’s get started.

Tools and materials:

  • Bracelets
  • Bowl
  • Measuring cup
  • Tablespoon 
  • Spoon
  • Aluminum foil
  • Paper towel 
  • Salt
  • Baking soda

1. Line the bowl with aluminum foil

Tear off a sizeable amount of aluminum foil and use it to line the inside of your bowl.

2. Prepare your water

Use your measuring cup to measure out 1 cup of water, then heat it for two minutes in the microwave.

3. Add additional ingredients to the bowl

Add 1 TBSP of salt and 1 TBSP of baking soda to the bowl.

4. Add the water and stir

Pour your warm water into the bowl and then stir the mixture together.

5. Soak or clean your jewelry

To clean gold-plated jewelry, soak the jewelry in the mixture for no longer than 10 minutes.


Another technique is to place your jewelry into the mixture and periodically remove and rub with a paper towel or other kind of cloth to remove the tarnished spots.


Continue until the spots are no longer visible.

6. Rinse and let dry

Rinse your jewelry with warm water to remove any residue from the mixture and let your pieces dry.
