There are so many fun ways to enhance your natural beauty, from a glowy highlighter kit that sculpts your cheekbones, to a set of faux eyelashes that make your eyes pop. Among the coolest inventions in the beauty world are magnetic lashes.

It can be timely and costly to get continuous eyelash extensions, and messy and irritating to use disposable, glue-on fake eyelashes. Magnetic lashes, however, allow you to seamlessly enjoy the benefits of longer, fuller lashes without harming your natural lashes.

Here, we cover everything you need to know about what magnetic lashes are and how to apply them.

What are magnetic lashes?

Magnetic lashes are fairly new to the beauty world and, while they look similar to regular false eyelashes, the mode of application is different.

Regular false eyelashes involve applying a special glue to the strip at the base of the fake eyelashes and then pressing the lashes to your own lash line.

Magnetic lashes offer an easier approach. The falsies adhere to your eyes in one of two ways. One is by sandwiching your natural lashes between two magnetic lash strips that adhere to each other.

While this style of lash sounds good in theory and fairly easy to execute, the sandwiching of your natural lashes over many hours can cause them to tug and fall out.

The other, more popular choice of magnetic lashes involves applying a magnetic eyeliner to the skin on your eyelid directly above your lash line, then pressing the falsies (which have microscopic magnets) against the liner.

Benefits of magnetic lashes

Magnetic lashes are easier to apply, far less messy than using lash glue, and can be cleaned and reused many times over, getting you a great bang for your buck.

Lash glue can also be a major irritant for many people, causing allergic reactions that null the glamor of applying the lashes in the first place! Furthermore, when peeling off traditional false eyelashes, the strong glue can pull out your natural lashes.

How to choose a magnetic lash style

Brands have now curated a whole collection of eyelashes. One of the leaders in the industry, Glamnetic, offers lashes for a variety of needs and styles. Here are the main magnetic lash shapes:

  • Round lashes (equal length all the way around)
  • Cat eye (shorter on the inside and longer on the outside)
  • Wispy lash (alternative lengths)

You can also choose magnetic eyelash sets based on fullness and length. For instance, a set featuring 4mm-long sparse fibers will provide a very understated, natural look, while a thick set of 15mm fibers is great for a glamorous look.

Finally, pick from synthetic fibers or mink. Synthetic lashes are made with a plastic fiber called PBT, Polybutylene Terephthalate. They’re firm and sturdy, and feature a glossy appearance. They’re ideal for those looking for a 100 percent cruelty-free option.

Mink lashes are made from real mink hair. The texture is very soft, smooth, and fluffy. They are lighter than their synthetic counterparts, and are less likely to cause eye irritation resulting from a reaction to PBT.

How to apply magnetic lashes and liner

As we mentioned above, the best option for applying magnetic lashes is by using a magnetic eyeliner.

Whereas the type that sandwiches your lashes between two magnets runs the risk of pulling out your natural lashes after wearing the falsies all day long, magnetic eyeliner makes sure the falsies simply peel off from the skin on your lids.

Here’s how to apply magnetic lashes and liner, step by step.

Tools and materials needed:

  • Your choice of makeup remover
  • Magnetic lash kit (lashes, tweezers, magnetic liner, etc.)

1. Prep your lashes

Make sure your eyelashes and eyelids are clean, dry, and free of any makeup.

Do so by using makeup remover wipes (or your choice of makeup remover) to clean your eyelids, lashes, and the skin around your eyes.

2. Shake the eyeliner

With the eyeliner bottle closed, shake the eyeliner to help evenly distribute the liquid within.

3. Apply the magnetic liner

Apply the magnetic liner as you would any other liquid eyeliner.

Take the eyeliner applicator in your hand and starting at the inside corner of one eyelid.

Drag the liquid across the base of the lid at the lash line outward until you reach the outside corner of your eye.

Allow the liner to dry to about 80 percent before applying the lashes. This should take about a minute.

Secure the eyeliner applicator back into the bottle.

4. Apply the magnetic lashes

Remove the lashes from their case. As you do so, bend them gently to help soften the band and remove rigidity, which will help you apply the lashes.

Next, place your finger in the middle of the eyelash band, then make contact with the outer corner of the eyeliner first.

Then, make contact with the inner corner. Gently pinch the base against the root of your natural lashes to make sure it sets.

If it’s easier, you can also use a set of tweezers as opposed to your hand for the entire application process.

5. Repeat with your second eye

Repeat Steps 3 and 4 to apply the set of eyelashes to your second eye.

How to remove and clean magnetic lashes

The removal process is a safe, effective method that will take off the magnetic lashes while saving your natural ones.

With your fingers, gently pull lashes off the magnetic liner, taking special care to pull off only the falsies, not your natural lashes.

Then, use your favorite makeup remover or coconut oil to remove the magnetic eyeliner from your lids.

Then you’ll want to properly clean the magnetic lashes so they can safely be worn again. With your fingernail, scratch off any dried magnetic liner stuck to the lashes. For stubborn areas, gently agitate with a makeup remover wipe. Place the lashes back in their case to use again later!
