Quick and Easy Tutorial on How to Curl Short Pixie Hair

Try out this styling technique to learn how to curl short hair. In this tutorial, you’ll see how I style my pixie cut, but it would work for any length of hair.

Tools and materials:

  • Heat protectant spray
  • Paddle brush
  • Claw clip
  • Bobby pins
  • 1” hair straightener 
  • 2 mirrors
  • Hair oil
  • Argan oil 
  • Texturizing paste
Before: naturally air-dried hair

1. Protect your hair

Before styling, apply heat protectant spray to your hair. The brush to evenly distribute the product.

2. Clip up your hair

Clip up the top section of hair with a claw clip to allow access to the bottom layer of hair.

Use bobby pins as needed to clip any small sections that don’t stay in the clip.

3. Curl the bottom layer of hair

To curl, grab small, 1” inch sections of hair, place the iron at the root and twist the hair away from your face.


You can mix up the curl directions if you want, but I prefer guiding the hair away from my face.

When you reach the back, feel around for the straight pieces to ensure that you don’t skip hair.

4. Unclip the top half and curl in 3-4 sections

Remove the clips from the top half of your hair.


Curl this portion of your hair in 3-4 sections, clipping up smaller sections as needed.


The more you twist the hair on the straightener, the tighter the curls will be.

5. Detail the front

For your front section of hair, pay extra care to create a curl shape that looks flattering.


I’m dragging the iron downward at the end of the hair so that these curls don’t pop straight up.

6. Apply argan oil

Apply a small amount of argan oil to your fingers and run them over the ends of your hair.

7. Apply texturizing paste

Apply a pea sized amount of texturizing paste on your fingers. Then rub it between your hands to heat it up.


Spread it throughout your hair.

Use your fingers to almost twist the product through the curls. Mess with the curls until you get them to sit just how you like.


I also tucked the hair behind my ears.
