Before beauty routine

Here I am before my simple, beauty routine. In this shot, I just woke up and am not wearing any makeup.

On a physiological level, people are considered beautiful based on a few key factors: healthy skin and hair, big eyes, full lips and symmetry.

And in this shot, I’m still not wearing makeup, but I look significantly better.

So, what’s the difference? Let’s break down how to look gorgeous and feel better without wearing any makeup.

Grooming

It's really important to groom your brows and get rid of peach fuzz and facial hair, so that your skin is smooth.

1. Brows

Use a spoolie to brush your eyebrow hairs all the way up, then pluck anything that falls beyond the brow line.

Using a small, magnifying mirror is helpful in getting the hairs you would otherwise miss.

When you’re finished cleaning under the brows, make sure to clean up the top of the brows too, being careful not to disturb the natural shape.

2. Wax the peach fuzz

I use a DIY wax kit that I found on Amazon. I wax my upper lip about once a month. Even if your facial hair isn’t as evident, you will be shocked at how much actually comes off on the wax.

Make your skin glow

1. Retinol for young skin

I use a retinol serum at night, multiple times a week, now that I’m in my mid 30s. It increases cell production and exfoliates, often leaving my skin a bit flaky, especially above my eyebrows.

2. Apply exfoliant

Exfoliate your skin, and if you have an oily T-zone like me, focus on massaging the exfoliant there. This should address clogged pores and excess oil.

Applying exfoliant

Be sure to exfoliate your lips to reduce cracks and dry spots there as well. Then hop in the shower to rinse off the exfoliant and wash your hair well.

As you can see, just from that hair removal and exfoliant, my skin already looks a lot better!

Even out your skin tone

1. Moisturize

Apply a tinted moisturizer. This is lighter than foundation, but you still have the option to add color while you hydrate your skin and softly blur out any imperfections.

2. Apply eye cream

Apply a brightening eye cream to hydrate and lighten the dark circles under the eyes.

You can see how it has brightened my under eye softly without the whole concealer and powder drama.

Perfect your brows

The quickest way to show facial symmetry is with your brows. Spray a spoolie brush with hairspray and brush it through your brows.

This will keep your brows in place all day long and give that laminated look, but on a budget.

Open up your eyes

Now we want to give the illusion of bigger eyes. One way to do that without makeup is to curl your eyelashes. If you have stubborn lashes, you can heat up your lash curler with a blow dryer first.

Curling lashes

Add moisture to your lips

Instead of buying a clear, lip balm, try one with a natural tint to add a bit of a flush that will immediately take years off your face!

You can also gently pinch your cheeks to balance out the flushing there as well.

Volumize your hair

Just because you aren’t doing your makeup, it doesn’t mean that you can’t treat your hair!

Blow out your clean hair (I’m using a blow dryer brush) focusing on adding volume at the top.

When finished, apply a bit of dry shampoo to make the blowout last longer.

It might seem strange, but this allows the product to be ready to collect the oil that would weigh the hair down, before it gets the chance.

Add finishing touches

This part of the self-care session is unique to every person, but I just don’t feel like myself without a pair of earrings.

I also like to use my favorite perfume so that I smell as good as I feel.
