How to Thin Hair With Thinning Scissors: DIY Hair Thinning at Home
Do you have a little volume that makes your hair way too robust? Perhaps you simply have thick luscious locks that are in dire need of some shape and style. Whatever the reason, I’m going to show you how to thin hair with thinning scissors.
It’s the perfect solution to jazz up your hair and create some shape and style. So, if you’re wondering how to thin out hair safely, then keep on scrolling to find out!

- Thinning scissors
- Clips
- Brush
1. Section your hair
Section your hair and clip the rest in place. Typically, the middle section is where most hair thinning takes place as it simply reduces the bulk from underneath. However, sometimes thinning your hair on the top section will also do the trick if you have super thick hair.
2. Start thinning
Now, it’s important to note that when you use these thinning shears, it’s best to place the hair in the middle of the scissors, as shown.
Next, place a section of your hair in the middle of the scissors. Start from around halfway through your hair.
Tip: Use the bulkier sections of your hair that need thinning, not the ones that don’t.
Then, simply snip the bulkier sections. Snip the scissors halfway and not all the way through.
Then, remove the hair with your fingers.
Clip the section of hair that you just thinned so that you don’t get confused and thin it again.
Repeat the process on other sections of your hair (where needed).
After I was done with the midsection of my hair, I noticed some top sections that were a bit bulky. If this is the same for you, simply follow the same process.
