How to Sew a Jumpsuit in 7 Easy Steps

Tools and materials:

• Woven crepe fabric, 60 inches (150 cm) wide
• Narrow elastic
• Fabric marker
• Ruler
• Measuring tape
• Pins
• Scissors
• Sewing machine

1. Cut out the pants

Cut a piece 40 inches (102 cm) wide and 60 inches (152 cm) wide from your fabric.

Fold in half and half again and lay it flat with the folded edge towards you.

Mark 11 inches (28 cm) from the folded edge up one side edge.

Draw a line across the fabric 14 inches (36 cm) from the same edge.

Join the mark to the line and draw a curve in the angle between them for the crotch.

Mark 13 inches (34 cm) from the folded edge up the other side edge.

Draw a line joining the mark to the end of the crotch seam.

Cut out the pants shape.

2. Shape the front

Open out the folded fabric.

Mark 1 inch (2.5 cm) in from one edge at the crotch. Cut a strip off the pants from there to the hem for the center front seam.

Mark 2 inches (5 cm) down from the waist edge at the center front. Draw a tapered line to the center back and cut.

3. Assemble the pants

Serge or overlock the raw edges.

Sew both crotch seams with the right sides together.

Re-fold the pants so the crotch seams are in the center and sew the inner leg seams.

Turn up a narrow hem on the legs and sew in place.

4. Cut out the bodice

Cut a piece of fabric 16 inches (40 cm) wide and 60 inches (152 cm) long.

Fold it in half and half again and place the folded edge towards you.

Mark 6 inches (15 cm) along the folded edge from one side edge. Draw a line 11 inches (28 cm) long across the fabric from this point.

Mark 7 inches (18 cm) up the nearest side edge from the fold. Join it to the line you just drew and curve the angle between them.

Draw a line from the end of the curve to the other side edge of the fabric, and cut it out.

Cut a tapered line one finger’s width from the folded edge to the top of the armhole for the shoulders.

5. Assemble the bodice

Finish all the raw edges with a serger or overlock stitch.

Join the side seams with the right sides together.

Turn in a narrow hem around the armholes and sew it in place.

Fold the neck edge to the wrong side by 1.5 inches (4 cm) and sew it down. Leave the ends open to make a channel.

6. Attach the bodice to the pants

Turn the pants right side out. Place them with the center front and center back seams aligned.

Place a pin at the halfway point on each side.

Mark the center front and back of the edge of the bodice in the same way.

Lay the bodice out flat with the lower edge away from you.

Slide the top edge of the pants inside the bodice so the right sides are together. 

Align the waist edges and pin and sew them together.

Cut the elastic to 22 inches (56 cm) in length and mark it into quarters.

Starting at the center back, stitch the elastic to the waist seam inside the seam allowance, aligning the quarter marks with the seams and stretching the elastic as you sew.

7. Halter strap

Cut a strip of fabric 51 inches (130 cm) long by 2.5 inches (6 cm) deep.

Fold it in half with the right sides together and sew the short and long edge, leaving an opening part way along the long edge.

Push the ends out through the opening to turn the strap right side out and sew the opening closed.

Thread the strap through the neck channels and tie over one shoulder.
