For today's hairstyle, I wanted to do a high bun updo that is perfect for weddings. I want to start doing more wedding hair updos, so be on the lookout for those. This easy hairstyle would be great for bridesmaids, wedding guests, or any special occasion really. Let's get started.

Tools and materials:

  • Volumizing dry shampoo
  • Brush or comb
  • Elastics
  • Bobby pins
  • Clip
Teasing hair for volume

1. Volumize

Firstly, I spray my hair with some volumizing dry shampoo. Next, I use a comb or brush and just do a little bit of teasing.

Tying hair into four ponytails

2. Tie four ponytails

What you're going to do is create four ponytails; two at the front and two at the back, high up on your head. Here are my first two.

Tying the ponytails in knots

3. Tie the ponytails in knots

Take your top left ponytail and your bottom right ponytail and tie a knot as if you were tying a shoe. It's just a simple basic knot.

Securing the knots with bobby pins

Make sure you tie it tight. I'm just clipping the front strand down temporarily and then I place a bobby pin right in the center of that knot.

Now take your other two strands, so your upper right strand and bottom left strand, and you're going to do the same thing. Tie a tight knot right over that first knot.

Put a bobby pin right in the middle of the knot.

Now take the clip out from the front section. Then I'm going to take my two most left pieces and I'm going to do another knot. Because my hair is long, I'm doing another knot; if your hair is short, you may skip this step and do the next step.

I'm tying a knot with the two left pieces this time, then I secure it with a bobby pin right in the middle.

Now moving over to the right side of our head with those two right pieces. We're going to do the same thing. Make another knot, tie it tight and put a bobby pin right in the middle of that knot.

Long hair tied in knots

It looks something like this, a little crazy.

Twisting the sections of hair

4. Twist

Now take those two right pieces and twist them over each other, creating a twist all the way down. Once you've created that twist, pinch and pull it.

Wrapping hair under the ponytail

5. Wrap

Take that twist and bring it towards the front of the head and under the top ponytail.

Wrapping the twist around the elastic

Wrap it around so that it covers that clear elastic. Then, bobby pin it into place.

Do the same thing on the other side.

Twisting two sections of hair together

If one piece is much small than the other, grab a section of hair from the other side, add it in, and then do a twist all the way down.

Crossing the twist over to the back

Bring the twist around the bottom of that bun and across to the other side and bobby pin it into place.

Wrapping hair around the finger and pinning it

Then you just want to take the excess hair, wrap it around your finger, and bobby pin it. What I ended up doing was pushing it up under the bun. I fixed that a little later, but yeah, learn from my mistake.

Pinching and pulling the loops

6. Pinch and pull

Then the most important part of the hairstyle, going around and pinching and pulling all these little loops that you see. We want these to be nice and big and fluffy.

Pinching and pulling the hair for volume

Once you do that to your bun, do the same thing to the front, just pinch and pull all around your head to give it some volume.

Framing the face

7. Frame the face

Then I am just going to pull out some hair to frame my face. I always pull out hair, but you could definitely leave it slicked back for a sleeker look.

Wedding hair updo from the front

Now my high updo wedding hairstyle is complete. Here is what it looks like from the front.

And this is what it looks like from the back. I added a clip for the hairs that are hanging down the back.

You might have to tweak it according to your hair and your length, but I really like this as a wedding hairstyle for long hair. It's perfect for so many different occasions. It's just a beautiful bun. You can keep it up high or you can make it a nice low bun.

That’s it you guys, this is the wedding hair updo. I love it. It's romantic. It's elegant. It's beautiful. You can wear it for so many different occasions, not just weddings.

It’s beautiful but looks like I’ll need a lot of practice to make it work. Thanks for sharing such clear instructions!

Love this! I have to go to a funeral Monday, and this just might be the thing I need to mat my hair look nicer now that it’s growing out. I may try tying a ribbon around it to give it an interesting twist.
