If you need to brighten yourself up on one of those blah mornings, a simple application of lipstick could do the trick! Follow this tutorial to learn about lipstick for older women, including lipstick recommendations and tips for how to apply lipstick to older lips.

Tools and materials:

  • Lipstick primer
  • Assorted lipstick colors and brushes
  • Lip gloss
  • Cotton swabs

I'm using makeup from  Look Fabulous Forever, which is specially designed for older skin, but you can replicate the same techniques with your own preferred products.

Applying primer to lips before lipstick

1. Start with primer

When you apply lipstick primer, you are keeping your lipstick from bleeding and the lipstick edge nice and sharp.

You only need to apply lipstick primer first, even if you refresh your lipstick throughout the day.

2. Remove residue

After you apply the lipstick primer, use a cotton swab to wipe over your lips to remove any leftover residue and ensure your lips are dry before you add lipstick.

But avoid wiping off the edges because if you do, then the primer will lose some of its purpose.

3. Create an edge

Use a very thin lip brush and your lipstick to create an outline of your lips. This is particularly important if you have thin lips.

As you are creating your edge, push up gently under your lower lip to get the maximum amount of lip for edging and push down above your top lip.

4. Fill in with lipstick

Now fill in the rest of your lips with a lip brush and the same lipstick color you edged your lips with.

5. Change lipstick to lip stain

Use your fingertip to rub the lipstick into your lips. This transforms your lipstick into a lip stain, which gives you color without making your lips too vibrant.

To make your lipstick last longer you can apply a second coat.

6. Add lip gloss

Add lip gloss over your lipstick by dotting it onto your lips, and not dragging it across your lips.

The lip gloss will give your lips a finished look, and if your lips are thin, will make them look fuller and more luscious.

7.  Lipstick color recommendations

I used a soft plum shade for a really pretty, soft look. Pink will also give you a soft look.

You can opt for a cherry red lipstick if you’re going for a “wow!” Cherry red looks especially good if you are wearing white clothes.

Choose a fuchsia shade of lipstick for a bright summer look.

If your skin tone is a warmer shade, then you may want to go with the orange-brown tones. A soft pinky brown is a lovely choice.

If you want a soft color and you are warm-toned, try a coral shade of lipstick.
