Curling eyelashes

1. Quality lash curler

Find a great lash curler that works well for you.

You can try a heated lash curler which is great for long-lasting curls and most suitable if you have thick lashes.

2. Clean your curler

Make sure to clean your lash curler with alcohol and a cotton round to get rid of makeup residue.

If the tool is sticky, you run the risk of pulling out lashes!

3. Heat your lash curler

After your lash curler is clean, heat it up with a blow dryer. Your lashes are better manipulated when heated.

Just make sure the curler is warm but not too hot.

4. Pump your curler and work up your lashes

Don’t just crimp the bottom of your lashes. Create a C-shape throughout your entire lashes.

Start from the bottom (root) of the lashes and pump the curler a few times.

Then move to the middle and the ends.

Repeat this a few times on each eye, if necessary.

5. Get a precision lash curler

A precision lash curler is excellent for lifting up those stubborn corners. You can also warm this with a blow dryer.

Curling lashes

Use the same technique as you did with the rest of your lashes, pumping from the root to the end.

Curling lashes

If you have small or deep set eyes, you can use a precision lash curler by itself, just working in small sections.

6. Prime your lashes

If you have thin lashes, an initial primer coat will bulk them up before you apply mascara.

It also conditions the lashes and extends the wear-time of your mascara.

Priming lashes

Since the primer can weigh down thin, straight lashes, I recommend doing another round of curling with the primer on.

If you end up with any clumps of primer, use a mascara comb to brush through them.

Combing lashes

Now it’s time to apply mascara. On one side I’m showing a prestige brand while on the other I’ll use a drugstore version.

7. Use waterproof mascara if your lashes are super straight

Although it’s a pain to remove waterproof mascara, it’s the only kind that will hold up super straight lashes for the entire day.

Just get a really good makeup remover for easier removal.

Applying mascara

Mascara is very individual, so pick a variety that targets your specific needs. See the info in the image:

Applying mascara

Apply your coats of mascara by wiggling density into the base, then lifting up.

Then remove any chunks with a lash comb.

Combing lashes

I also like to tip my mascara wand vertically and lift my lashes that way as well.

8. Use a lash guard

Using a lash guard is great because you can apply heavy coats of mascara quickly without getting mascara all over your lids.

I use this on my eyes every day and find it to be helpful.

Using lash guard

I like dusting the bottom lashes with mascara as well for framing and balance.

So far, here is what my naturally thin lashes look like after following these mascara hacks and tips:

9. Tightline your upper waterline

To make your lashes look even more like fake lashes, tightline with black eyeliner.

Also, keep your lid color light and bright to make it all about the lashes.

10. Fill in sparse areas with lash clusters

If you have especially thin lashes, you can fill in any gaps with clusters of false lashes.

Lash clusters

Just apply lash glue on the top.

Then use tweezers to pop them in the areas with less density.

Applying lash clusters

I used 3 on each side, focusing on the outer corners of each eye.

Here are the final results for each mascara type, and it’s hard to notice a difference!

This is a reminder that technique is often more important than the cost of the product!
