As winter bites and our summer color fades, we will probably need to change our rosy cheeks makeup to get a natural looking glow.

Today, I’m trying three shades of blusher, to see how well they go with my winter makeup.

I’m going out to lunch and it’s a bit gray and miserable outside, so I want to add some warmth to my cheeks.

I’ve already made up the rest of my face, so let’s see how these look!

The products I'm using today are from the Look Fabulous Forever range, made specifically for mature skin. However, you can achieve the same results with any brand of product.

Tools and materials:

  • Peach blusher
  • Rose blusher
  • Coral blusher
  • Blusher brush
  • Mirror
  • Kleenex
Applying blush

Application

I’m using a cream to powder blusher for all three shades. I think this or a cream formulation is more flattering to older skins as it’s less likely to settle in the wrinkles and look powdery.

I apply the blusher with my fingers and then blend it with a blusher brush if I need to.

As we get older, we need to put the blusher higher on our faces. The advice to apply it to the “apple” of our cheeks doesn’t seem to work so well at our age.

I use my fingers to find the top of my cheekbones.

Applying blush

I apply the blusher starting two finger widths from the side of my nose and sweep outwards from there, across my cheekbones.

Our faces are all different, so you may need to experiment to find the best and most flattering placement for you.

Blush

1. Peach blusher

I’m using the Peach Cream shade from this palette. It’s the lightest of the three that I’m trying today.

I’m also using the mirror from this palette, because it’s so good.

This is a delicate, soft peachy color that gives a very subtle effect.

Applying blush

It’s so subtle that it didn’t need any blending with the brush. I was able to blend it well enough just using my fingers.

The finished look is natural and very flattering, I think. It would be great for those days when you want to look as if you’re not wearing any makeup at all.

2. Rose blusher

I blotted my face with a tissue to gently remove the previous blusher without disturbing the rest of my makeup.

Blush

The second one is called Desert Rose in this brand.

It’s slightly deeper than the peach, but quite a neutral tone.

Applying blush

I just dab it on top of my cheekbones with my fingers and pat it gently to soften the edges.

Because this is darker than the peach, I need my brush to blend it properly.

Applying blush

I sweep the blush backwards and forwards over my cheekbones first, several times.

Then I use the brush in a circular direction to take the color down very slightly onto my cheeks, so I don’t get a striped effect and it looks natural.

You can see the difference between the blended and non-blended sides.

Rosy glow

It’s nothing too dramatic, not too strong for daytime, but it gives me a healthy glow.

Blush

3. Coral blusher

I removed the rose blusher before trying this one.

This is the darkest of the three blushers I use. It’s called Coral Pop and as you can see, I do use it a lot!

It’s especially effective when I have a slight tan in summer. I’m interested to see how it looks with my winter base.

Applying blush

It’s a cheerful shade, isn’t it?

You can see how much stronger it is before I start blending it with the brush.

Rosy glow

I’m blending it really well because I want to know if I can get away with it at this time of year.

I found it hard to choose between them in the end! I like all three but I’m going to keep the last one on.

I don’t think it’s too strong even in daylight. You may prefer a softer tone during the day and save this one for evening.

I’d love to know what you think. Which is your favorite look of the three for a rosy cheeks makeup?
