Cut the jeans

Determine the length that you want and cut the jeans accordingly. I cut mine with a diagonal line because I wanted something layered and fun.

Now, fold your pants and do the same to the other leg, by following the first cut line from the first leg.

Straighten the edges where necessary.

Create a distressed look

To create a distressed look, use a seam ripper and lightly pull down on the edges, as shown.

You can also make some cool little holes as I have done here. I simply snipped the jeans in the middle and ripped the hole to my desired size.

Add lace pieces

I had this unused lace top lying around. I decided to add some of it to the jeans. To do this, cut a square from your top.

Then cut it to length, place it under the jeans where the holes are.

Go ahead and cut two long panels from the top, too.

Now, pin your fabric to your DIY denim shorts and stitch to secure.

Pin the two longer fabric panels on the bottom of the vintage denim shorts. So that the lace sticks out.

Sew in place to secure.

Add trimmings and patches

I wanted to add some fun, hippie vibes to my denim shorts refashion project. I got a bunch of lovely fabric patch designs to add an extra touch of “wow” to my DIY denim shorts. I sewed a lovely gold trim around the pocket areas, including the front and back.

Then I added some funky hippy-like, sew-on patches with amazingly intricate designs and details to one side of the pocket area.

TIP-

It’s best to sew the patches manually.

So, what do you think of my denim shorts upcycle? The transformation is incredible, and the process in itself is totally fun! I hope I inspired you today on how to make denim shorts. Just a few materials and creativity, and you’ve got yourself a masterpiece!
