Ever wondered how to sew a biker shorts set? It’s actually pretty easy to make. Trust me; you can make a dozen of these DIY biker short sets in one day; it’s that straightforward. Let’s begin!

If you want to make your own biker shorts and matching crop top (that is super cute and comfy), then join me on this quick tutorial.

Tools and materials:

  • 1½ yard stretch fabric
  • Good fitting top and pants
  • Pins
  • Scissors
  • Measuring tape
  • Elastic band
  • Matching thread
  • Sewing machine
Folding a top to trace

1. Make the top

Let’s start with the top! Take your best-fitting top and fold it in half. Fold your fabric in half and place the top on the top of the fabric, so that the center of the top aligns with the fabric’s fold.

Cutting around the top

Cut around the top with a ¼-inch seam allowance. Exclude the sleeves and cut along the armhole.

Cutting out the back piece

Make a second piece by pinning the first on your piece of fabric. Then, cut around. Make the back neckline higher than the first.

Tracing pants for the shorts

2. Make the shorts

Place your pants on the fabric’s fold and measure how long you want your DIY biker shorts to be. Add two inches if you want the shorts to be high-waisted.

Then, cut along the shape of the jeans.

Cleaning the edges

Clean the edges where needed.

Pinning the crotch area

Pin the crotch area together and use it to cut the back piece.

3. Sew the shorts and top

You should have two front and back pieces for the shorts, plus two top pieces.

Take all the pieces to the sewing machine and sew the crotch areas of the shorts with a zigzag stitch. Then, sew the shoulder and side seams of the top. Once done, hem the armholes, neckline, and bottom of the top.

Sewing the crotch of the shorts

Place the sewn pieces of the DIY bike shorts (back and front) right sides touching. Pin the sides, inner leg seams, and crotch. Then, sew to secure using a zigzag stitch. Once complete, hem the bottom.

Sewing the waistband

Sew the waistband the same width as your elastic and add ¼ inch seam allowance. Leave a gap to insert the elastic after.

Inserting elastic

4. Insert the elastic

Insert your elastic through the open gap with the help of a safety pin. Sew the gap when done.
