You guys have to see how I turn a blanket into a mini skirt!

I had this adorable kitten blanket and I thought it would look so cute as a skirt. I love the idea of a knit skirt for fall.

Tools and materials:

  • Blanket
  • Scissors
  • Overlock
  • Sewing machine
  • Pins
  • Zipper
Skirt to use as template

1. Pattern reference

Skirts are a great sewing project because they’re so simple. You don’t even need a pattern.

You can just grab one of your favorite A-line skirts from your closet and use it as a pattern reference.

Cutting fabric

2. Cut, fold, cut

Using your skirt as a pattern reference, cut around the edge and midway into the waistline.

Then you can remove the pattern reference skirt and fold the fabric in half to trace and cut out the other half.

This will be the front of the skirt. Use this to trace out the back of the skirt and cut that out as well.

Overlocking fabric

3. Overlock

Blankets are thick so it’s best to overlock all the edges. This will prevent the edges from fraying.

Pinning

4. Pin and sew

Pin the front and back pieces together with the right sides facing and sew along one side.

Sewing

Open the pattern and fold down the waist half an inch and sew that down. Pin a zipper to the other side of the skirt and sew.

Then try it on and see if you need to add any darts.
