Here’s another great denim upcycle you can try. Use some old jeans to make this fun denim mini skirt!

Let's jump into it.

Tools and materials:

  • Old jeans
  • Ruler
  • Fabric marker or chalk
  • 6-inch zipper
  • Scissors
  • Thread
  • Sewing machine
  • Decorative appliques (optional)
Measuring fabric

1. Measure and cut fabric

Cut off one leg of your old jeans, below the crotch, and measure 14 inches from the top (or your desired skirt length.)

Cutting fabric

Cut out your skirt template.

Cutting fabric

Line up your template on the other jeans leg.

Mark the bottom a bit lower than your template and cut out the skirt fabric from your second leg.

Cutting fabric

Turn both pieces inside-out and cut off the inner seam.

Marking fabric

2. Mark front and back panels

Use fabric chalk to mark the shorter piece as the front and the longer piece as the back.

Marking fabric

With the pieces together and lined up at the bottom, mark the waist circumference, hip line and hip circumference as indicated in the image above on the front panel.

Sketch in and cut out the outline of your skirt.

Marking fabric

On the back panel, mark 4-inches in from the seam edge and 4-inches down for a dart.

Snipping fabric

Make a small snip on the waistline at the dart mark.

Measuring fabric

Mark the waist, hip line and hip circumference as shown in the above image on the wrong side of the back panel.

Marked fabric

Use your fabric chalk to connect all the measurements.

Marked fabric

With the back panel facing out, mark out where a 6-inch zipper will go from the top.

3. Sew side seams

Sew both side seams, allowing for the zipper to be attached later.

Sewing side seams

Fold the skirt in half, and trim the excess fabric from the sides.

4: Make side cut-outs

On the back panel, mark and measure 3 inches up the side, from the bottom, and 4 inches on the bottom from the side.

Making side cut-outs

Connect those two marks with a curved line.

Attaching zipper

6. Attach the zipper

Pin and sew the zipper into the open zipper allowance.

Making waistband

7. Make a waistband

On the remaining piece of the jeans leg, draw two straight lines the length of the fabric, 1½ inches apart.

Making waistband

Cut that strip from both layers of fabric and trim to 14½ inches long.

Making waistband

Sew the strips together along a short edge.

Making waistband

Pin the waistband to the top of the skirt.

Fold the waistband over and sew it in place.
