Today’s tutorial will be me attempting to make a skirt. I consider myself a beginner to intermediate sewer (sewing machines scare me a little bit) so if you feel the same, this is the perfect page for you! I try to pick things that are easy to make, like today’s DIY midi skirt. So, if you’re looking for a beginner’s tutorial, come along!

Tools and materials:

  • Jersey fabric
  • Measuring tape
  • Pencil
  • Elastic
  • Sewing machine
DIY midi skirt

Measure your fabric

Cut your fabric into a perfect square and then fold it in half diagonally so that you have a triangle. With the fold closest to you, measure off half your hip measurement (because the fabric is folded in half). Next, measure up from that mark until where you want your skirt to hit (I measure from my hips to right above my belly button and then marked that off). Finally, measure the waistline again from the very tip of the triangle, just to make sure that you get a straight measurement - draw a line connecting the dots.

Sew a midi skirt

Cut your fabric

Measure from the waist down to however long you want the skirt to be (I went with 30 inches for a midi-length skirt). Do this again with the measuring tape by the very top to make sure the markings are even and then connect the dots along the width of the skirt. Cut off the excess fabric on the bottom and by the waist.

How to sew a midi skirt

Add the elastic

Sew along the open side of the skirt. I then left the bottom raw (because I didn’t feel like the material required a hem) but if you specifically want a hem, feel free to add one now. Once your side seam is sealed, the last step is to make your waistband. Cut out a piece of elastic that is the same length as your skirt waist. Pin the elastic onto the waistband and then sew it down using a zigzag stitch. Remember, the skirt needs to be inside out for all these steps.

Make a bow

Double fold the waistband over to hide the elastic band and then sew another seam. Next, cut out a long strip of fabric, and then cut it in half to make 2 matching pieces. Cut the corners off the ends of the strips of fabric so that the edges will be pointed instead of square-shaped. Once that’s done, line up both pieces on the side seams of the skirt and sew them in place. Bring them both forward and tie the strips together to make a bow!

This simple midi skirt is a lot of fun - especially because there are multiple ways to wear it. It is flowy and easy and can be tied in a bow. Pair it with denim for a casual look, or dress it up with a blouse. The styling is your choice!
