Have you ever bought the Costco sized bag of avocados, thinking you would be eating avocados alllll week, only to have them ripen in a single day and you’re like, WHAT NOW?!! Yup, me too. Don’t get me wrong, I love me some avocados, but I can’t eat 6 in a single day. Probably not. Or maybe I could. Instead of gorging on avocados, I love to turn those perfectly ripe avocados into a treat for my face with a DIY avocado face mask. And then also make a big bowl of guac to go with it, because, why not?

IS AVOCADO A GOOD FACE MASK? A good face mask should leave your skin looking and feeling better than when you started, and there are lots of choices of natural, healthy ingredients to make your skin glow. Avocado is an excellent choice for a homemade face mask that will leave your skin feeling nourished and soft. It is one of my favorite foods to slather on my skin. AVOCADO FACE MASK BENEFITS Avocado is not only a superfood for your insides, but also works wonders to improve the look and feel of skin. It makes a fabulous choice for a homemade face mask. Avocados are high in healthy fats, making it a nourishing and moisturizing treat for your delicate facial skin. They are also high in Vitamins E and A, both of which are known for the anti-aging properties. And that beautiful green color of the avocado flesh is from none other than nature’s queen of green – chlorophyll. Chlorophyll can help reduce inflammation, something every good face mask should do. So if you’re looking for a homemade face mask that is anti-aging, moisturizing, reduces inflammation AND will make you look like the green goddess that you are, look no further than the glorious avocado.

Pick which is best for your skin type, or go straight up avocado, and let’s do it! I love using a masking bowl and brush for homemade face masks, it just makes it feel so much more luxurious! AVOCADO AND YOGURT FACE MASK

Yogurt is probably my favorite addition to an avocado face mask! It makes for an extra creamy and cooling mask and is anti-aging, calming, great for acne, moisturizing….basically ALL THE THINGS. We all know the benefits of yogurt for your gut, and the list of reasons to use yogurt on your skin is almost as long. I love a yogurt and avocado face mask for ALL skin types. It feels luxurious and the combination is gentle but oh-so-amazing for skin! HONEY AND AVOCADO FACIAL MASK

Honey is another great addition to an avocado face mask. Honey acts as a humectant, meaning it helps the skin to absorb moisture. So when combined with avocado, it makes a perfectly amazing skin-loving pair. Pure, raw honey is also antibacterial and full of antioxidants and is perfect for dry or aging skin. Honey is so gentle that it can really be used for all skin types with amazing benefits but it’s my favorite for dry or aging skin when paired with avocado for an amazing face mask. AVOCADO AND LEMON FACE MASK For acne-prone or very oily skin, lemon juice is a wonderful addition. I really love it paired with avocado because even though the lemon can be harsh on your skin if you use too much, it feels very gentle paired with avocado.

They make a great combination for acne prone skin and can help to eliminate and balance skin that feels out of whack. Make sure to listen to your skin when you apply this mask, and remove it when it starts to feel drying or tight. For me, this was about the 10-minute mark.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 ripe avocado
  • Optional add-ins:
  • Yogurt
  • Honey
  • Lemon juice

Instructions

  1. Mash the flesh of a very ripe avocado, or blend in a food processor for a super smooth avocado puree. Get as many lumps out as possible when mashing. Mix in your yogurt, honey or lemon juice if using and stir until combined. Using your fingers or a face mask brush, evenly spread a layer of avocado all over your face and neck. Let the mask sit on your face for 10-20 minutes and then rinse with warm water and a washcloth. Follow up with your favorite facial serum or moisturizer to help lock in that glowing skin!

Notes: Use chilled avocado for an extra cooling mask that will also help to tighten pores. Use face mask within 1-2 hours of making

Frequently Asked Questions HOW DO YOU PRESERVE AVOCADO FACE MASK? Your DIY avocado face mask is going to be best used fresh. Not only will it oxidize and turn brown after a few hours out, but your avocado will turn a little, well, gross. Since this facial mask is made of FRESH ingredients, treat it like food (because it is food….for your face!). Don’t store this mask any longer than you would, say, a bowl of homemade guacamole. The good news is that this homemade face mask is SO easy to make, you can whip up a fresh one any time in just a couple of minutes. CAN YOU PUT PLAIN AVOCADO ON YOUR FACE? Absolutely! Plain avocado makes a not so plain face mask that is loaded with benefits. It’s anti-aging, anti-inflammatory, high in healthy, skin loving fats and has a lovely creamy and cooling texture that makes it one of my favorite DIY face mask recipes. Give it a good mash, or a quick blend in the food processor, and smear it on! So easy! While you’re lounging around with avocado on your face, why not also give your feet a treat with this natural foot soak recipe. Sounds like an at-home spa day in the making to me!
