Today, I have some great tips for you for styling short hair, especially if you’re an older woman.

Our hair often gets thinner as a part of aging, as well as from environmental or other damage. Or we may have naturally fine hair, as I do.

I have my hair cut short to make the most of its natural bounce, but it still looks flat between shampoos.

So I’ve discovered some hair hacks and style tips for short hair.

Style along with me and see what I do!

The products I'm using today are from the Look Fabulous Forever range, made specifically for mature women. However, you can achieve the same results with any brand of product.

Tools and materials:

  • Volumizing shampoo
  • Volumizing conditioner
  • Root lift spray
  • Velcro rollers
  • Vent brush
Volumizing shampoo

1. Wash with a volumizing shampoo

I wash my hair with volumizing shampoo daily in summer and every other day the rest of the year.

If you use a good shampoo, you need a very small amount (the size of a UK 50 pence piece) each time, even for longer hair than mine.

I’m only on the second bottle of mine in two years!

Volumizing conditioner

2. Use a volumizing conditioner

You need even less of this, just enough to cover a UK 20 pence piece.

I prefer to use a rinse-out conditioner, so I don't risk weighing my hair down.

Hair in Velcro rollers

3. Velcro rollers for extra bounce

I use about six Velcro rollers while my hair dries. These are a real boon for thin hair.

I leave them in while I get dressed and put on my make-up, by which time my hair is usually dry.

I remove the rollers carefully, and run my fingers through my hair to blend in the curls.

Brushing hair

I brush my hair lightly with a vent brush.

Spraying on root lift

4. Spray on root lift

I lift my hair in sections and spray a little bit of root lift spray.

Adding texture

I want to add to the impression of volume, so I pull my hair up vertically as I spray it on and then really work it into my hair with my fingers.

After

I can feel my hair changing texture as the product coats it, so it feels and looks thicker.

I don’t brush my hair again, just use my fingers to pull it into shape and style it.

Make sure you use lightweight products that won’t drag your hair down or make it sticky.

I think it looks so much better after I’ve styled it this way. What do you think? Let me know in the comments if you can see the difference.
