How to Make a Peplum Top Out of a Dress - Easy DIY Peplum Top Tutorial
In today’s DIY peplum top tutorial, I’m going to show you how to make a peplum top pattern out of an old dress. The dress was just sitting in my closet, not getting any use, and I decided it would be the perfect candidate for a sewing project.
This DIY peplum top can be dressed down with jeans or dressed up with a skirt, and it’s incredibly easy to make. So if you’d like to learn how to make a peplum top out of a dress, keep reading!
Tools and materials:
- Dress
- Scissors
- Pins
- Measuring tape
- Ruler
- Fabric chalk
- Sewing machine
1. Measure and mark
To begin, I measured from my shoulder to my waist. Then, I measured out that same amount down from the shoulder of the dress and made a line across the dress with fabric chalk to mark the waist.
2. Cut the waistline
Then I cut the dress on that line.
3. Fold and cut
I folded the bottom part of the dress in half widthwise and cut along the fold.
4. Open the side seams
Then I opened the side seams on both of the bottom pieces to create two long rectangles.
I also cut off the bottom hem.
5. Pin and sew the ruffle
Next, I laid the two rectangles together with the right sides of the fabric facing each other, and pinned and sewed both short ends together to create a wide loop, which will become the ruffle of the peplum top.
6. Attach the ruffle to the top
To attach the top and bottom pieces, I laid the two pieces together with the right sides of the fabric facing each other, matched up the side seams, and pinned them together.
Then, I found the center front of the shirt and the center front of the ruffle, and pinned those, and repeated the same for the center back.
7. Make pleats
With the excess fabric, I began to make pleats all around the waistline and pinning them in place.
8. Sew the waistline
Once all the pleats were pinned down, I sewed all the way around the waistline with a straight stitch.
9. Hem
Finally, to hem the top, I folded the bottom edge once and sewed it down.
