How to make a DIY swimsuit

Cut the fabric

Cut two of each pattern piece. I used a black print fabric and white fabric for the lining and the top part. You can choose whatever your heart desires! With your rotary cutter or scissors, cut out the bottom bits. Make sure you cut out lining pieces, too.

Then go ahead and make the strips for the wrap part. I made mine extra long than what the pattern indicates because I really wanted to emphasize the wrap part. For this, cut a strip that's 3 inches widthwise and 60 inches long. Cut two of these modified strips.

How to sew a DIY swimsuit

Assemble the DIY swimsuit

Now that you have all the pieces cut out go ahead and begin sewing. Start by matching the back piece with the lining, right sides facing. Sew along the top area and the leg holes. In the same breath, also attach elastic to the same places.

Then, take your front bottom piece and sew just the leg holes together. Leave the front pieces untouched.

Match the main fabric and the lining for the bust pieces. Sew along the inner bust as well as the shoulder seams. Leave the bottom untouched, as well as the side.

TIP-

Just as the first piece, attach elastic to the same areas throughout.

Next, fold your straps and sew the edges. Make sure they are right sides together for this part. Then, turn them inside out with your loop turner.

Assemble the bust pieces and strap

Now, insert the straps inside the bust pieces. Line them up at the strap opening and sew to secure. Turn your piece inside out afterward.

Attach the bust pieces to the front bottom by sliding them inside the bottom part, in between the fabric and lining. Match the pieces right sides together and sew the edge accordingly. You should be sewing four layers together.

Sew along the top edge to attach everything together.

Now, insert your front piece inside of the back piece. Make sure to align the gussets as well as both sides. Pin across all four layers of fabric.

Then, sew those areas.

So everything is stitched up. To turn your DIY swimsuit inside out, seam rip a one-inch hole along an existing seam.

Through this hole, take everything back to the right side. Finally, finish off the hole with either a top or invincible stitch.

Here is the final result! Your DIY one-piece swimsuit is complete! I hope you enjoyed this DIY swimsuit sewing tutorial. Now that you know how to make a DIY swimsuit, what print and colors will you choose? Remember, the sky's the limit here! Get creative and happy swimsuit sewing!
