How to Make a Warming DIY Hand Muff Out of an Old Coat & Necktie
Baby, it’s cold outside! The best way to combat that cold is something I guarantee you already have in the back of your closet. That’s right - I’m going to show you the best way to make a DIY hand muff out of an old coat and necktie! Let's get started.
Tools and materials:
- Cozy old coat
- Coordinating necktie
- Measuring tape
- Scissors
- Sewing machine
- Pins
1. Cut out the fabric
Cut out the fabric for your DIY hand warmer muff from the old coat. I cut out a 14in x 18in rectangle from the back of the jacket where there were no lines, seams, or zippers.
2. Add trim
This is an optional step, but if your old coat comes with a faux fur trim collar, you can use it to add a bit of style to your DIY hand muff.
To do this, remove the trim from the coat and cut it in half. Then, stitch each half to the raw, cut edges of the fabric from the coat.
3. Add necktie and pocket
Once the edges are complete, place the necktie in the center of the inside of the coat fabric and pin for stitching. This is going to function as a neck strap for your hand muff.
I also took a small square of leftover fabric from the coat and pinned it to the inside to make a tiny pocket. It’ll be super useful to stash your phone, keys, or lipstick if you so desire!
Once the necktie strap is attached, flip your hand muff over so the inside is facing down. Then, fold the fabric over the necktie so it's right side facing.
Sew along the edges, and then flip inside out. Your funky new hand warmer is complete.
