I recently went to NYC with Mr. G.Q. to visit my youngest son Jake and his wonderful fiancee, Rachel. This post is exactly what I wore to NYC in December. If you’re planning a wintery trip to a cold city like New York, this might be helpful for your outfit planning.

I am a December baby (December 9), so I tend to love dressing for the holidays for all of December and even into early January. Let’s look at my different outfits and see if they inspire you to peek into your wardrobe for similar looks. And if you need to pick up an item or two, many of them are already on sale! (Click on the highlighted type or on the photos of the items to see all the great deals!)

Here’s a lovely photo of the iconic Christmas tree in NYC’s Rockefeller Center.

In this post...

What I Wore to NYC in December

Little Black Dress with Black Coat
My new favorite Little black dress with 3/4 sleeves, a sparkly collar and black tights.

Isn’t this dress so cute?! I love this Jackie O-inspired dress. It’s a classic black knit dress with a really pretty black sequined collar. The sleeves are three-quarters length style and the bodice has universally flattering princess seams down the bust. I paired it with a pair of black opaque tights and black suede pumps. I added a black wrap coat (similar, here as mine is sold out). I also added a black cross-body bag which will be easy to wear when walking around New York. The dress is REALLY ON SALE today as I am writing this post!

For jewelry, I wore a pair of “diamond” stud earrings, a pearl bracelet, and my classic stainless steel Ebel watch. Pro-tip: I tend to wear the same jewelry over and over because I like how the pieces look together and I think they are all great values.

I wore this to a dressy dinner in Queens at Il Falco. I felt pretty, comfortable, and warm.

Here's a cozy and classic black wool wrap coat. Good for all winter. So sharp!

Royal Blue Sweater with Velvet Jeans
My really bright blur cashmere v-neck sweater worn with a sparkly statement necklace and velvet jeans.

I LOVE BLACK VELVET JEANS!!! They are so soft, warm, and comfy to wear. I wear them every holiday season starting Black Friday through the end of January! They are easy to wear and washable. I think they look sharp with booties as well as with dressy sandals. Pro-tip: I tuck the hem under if I am wearing a lower boot and it stays in place because of the velvet texture. Then when I am wearing a higher boot or shoe, I just unfold the tucked hem.

With this outfit, I paired a royal blue v-neck cashmere sweater and a pretty sparkly statement necklace. My boots are suede block-heeled ones, but you could also easily wear leather riding boots as well.

This is what I wore to see Jerry Seinfeld at the Beacon theater. He was FABULOUS! Beforehand, we had dinner at ABC kitchen (delicious fried chicken, cool atmosphere, see photos below). After the show, we had dessert at the very delightful and iconic Serendipity restaurant (more photos). My kids had their famous frozen hot chocolate, Mr. G.Q. had a HUGE hot fudge Sunday, and I had pecan pie (weird choice, but yummy).

This is the fun front window seating at ABC kitchen.

Black and White Sweater, Leggings, Boots, and a Red Turtleneck
I am wearing a black and white houndstooth cardigan over a red turtleneck with black leggings, black boots, and a red crossbody bag.

I love adding a pop of red to my outfit over the winter and especially during the holidays. It really brightens up a look. I showed this houndstooth cardigan earlier this fall ad it looks just as cute when paired with this red turtleneck. The turtlenecks at Talbots wear really well (on sale today @40% off). They are medium weight. I wear a medium in their turtlenecks. The cardigan is WAY ON SALE. It originally sold for $159 and today is going for $59.99! A truly great buy! I wear an extra-small.

I wore the cardigan and turtleneck with black pointe leggings. These are my favorite leggings as they stay black through multiple washes and are of substantial weight so they look very smooth on my thighs. They are so comfortable and I wear a size medium in them. I wore black riding boots with this look and I’ll carry a round red crossbody bag. (At the last minute, I switched to my Hunter rain boots as it turned into a VERY rainy 36 hours on our trip!)

I wore this site seeing with Mr. G.Q. one day. It was a perfect-weight sweater as it was nice and cozy. I added a black overcoat and the red turtleneck peeked out.

Black Turtleneck, Velvet Jeans, and Black Watch Plaid Poncho
Here I am wearing a black ribbed turtleneck with black velvet jeans, a black watch plaid poncho, and a pearl choker.

Plaid is readily associated with the holidays, but I love plaid all winter if it’s cold. This outfit is such a festive one because I added the pearl choker to the neckline over the black ribbed J McLaughlin turtleneck. The pants are the same AG velvet jeans from the second outfit above. Pro-tip: Combining the black turtleneck and black jeans make for a very sharp column of black. As you will see below, in the fifth look, I will simply change up the topper to make a very different and more casual look.

I am again in the black watch poncho, but you can see how I belted just the front of it with a black and silver belt.

In this fourth outfit, I added a black watch plaid poncho scarf that I belted in just the front. My boots are riding boots and if it’s cold in NYC, I’ll just wear this whole look under my black overcoat.

I wore this look to Sunday brunch at Redline. Very classy and delicious food. We also got a private tour of Madison Square Garden as my lovely son-to-be daughter-in-law works there (see photos, below).

We were scheduled to see Billy Joel perform at Madison Square Garden the next night, but unfortunately, he got sick and had to reschedule. Stay tuned for that!

Here is a GIANT ornament emblazoned with the NY Knicks logo and made to look like a basketball. MSG also owns the NY Knicks!

Black Turtleneck, Velvet Jeans, Black Puffer Vest, Riding Boots, a Red Plaid Scarf, and a Red Bag

The devil’s in the details. By pairing the black basics with the red plaid blanket scarf and red crossbody bag, I was able to easily reuse the turtleneck from the fourth look as well as the velvet jeans from the second and fourth outfits. I added a black puffer vest. Pro-tip: Accessories really allow me to pack less and still have lots of different cute looks.

I wore this outfit to an impromptu pizza party and Christmas present opening at my son’s and fiancee’s Mid-town apartment. This was also my traveling outfit when paired with my black overcoat. If I got hot, I just pulled off the coat. On the plane, I wore the vest and scarf over the turtleneck and used the coat as my blanket.

There you have it! What I wore to NYC in December. I hope this was a helpful post and will encourage you to travel to a cold city in December, January, or February. It was such fun!

XO,

Dr. Julie
