Soothe the symptoms of cold with easy to make shower steamers and bring the calming effects of aromatherapy into your shower! This is a natural and budget-friendly way to minimize the nasty flu effects and improve your sleep! This is an easy project that'll have you enjoying hot showers more often than you'd like to admit icon

You’ll need a scale to make this project because you have to be very precise when adding water; too much can result in steamers puffing up; once that happens, they’re useless. If you don’t add enough water, they’ll crack and turn to dust when you touch them.

Visit Wild for Nature blog for precise amounts of ingredients and more detailed tips on how to make these fizzies.

The process of making these fizzies is very simple: mix the ingredients well and pack them tightly into the molds of choice. Make sure to protect your nose and mouth with a mask/scarf to prevent inhaling any dust when mixing the batch.

Weigh all the ingredients. In a bowl (any will do, as long as it’s high enough to prevent any spills), combine citric acid with baking soda, stir. Add tapioca powder and stir again, slowly.

In a separate bowl, combine water with essential oils.

Next, begin adding the water mixture slowly. Add it bit by bit, a few drops at a time, whisking the mixture vigorously to evenly distribute the water. When you run out of water-oil mixture, the mixture should stay in a lump when you squeeze it. The mixture is ready.

If you want to color the shower melts (like in a photo), here’s what you do:

Divide the mixture into 2 parts. Add mica powder to one part and stir well. Begin packing the mixture into the molds, using white and green part of the mixture to get colorful patterns.

You can also add mica powder to the entire batch to color all the fizzies green.

Leave the steamers dry in the molds up to one hour.

Next, take them from the molds and let them air dry for another hour. Pack them in a dry airtight container.

To use, place one steamer on the shower floor away from direct water stream. Sprinkle it with water and let it fizz away, releasing essential oils at the same time!

Substitutions and tips:

  • Use arrowroot powder or cornstarch in place of tapioca starch
  • Mica powder is optional to use, but gives a lovely splash of color to the steamers as they work great as DIY gift idea
  • You can omit citric acid and replace it with more baking soda
  • Wear gloves and a dust mask when mixing dry ingredients

Tapioca starch and essential oils can be pricey. You listed the cost of the project as $5. How many fizzies can you make for this cost?
