In this guide, I’m going to show you how to update your style. I know you might be thinking that I’m just going to tell you about a bunch of pieces you need to buy; well, no, that’s not the case - none of my tips involve any shopping at all!
1. Don’t be afraid to be an outfit repeater
If there are certain pieces and certain style combinations that you love to wear, don’t be afraid to wear them on repeat. If those outfits make you feel good about yourself, then there is no harm in repeating them.
I would advise, though, to try to tweak those outfits just very slightly. For example, I adore wearing my black leather pants, and I like to style them with a white button-down.
What I would do here is sometimes wear the button-down tucked in, sometimes untucked, sometimes half-half, and sometimes cross tucked. I could also have the sleeves all the way down or rolled up, or I could wear the shirt as an outerwear piece with a vest top underneath.
It's simple tweaks like that that can make the same pieces look different each time.
You can also try to accessorize the look by changing up your jewelry, handbag, and shoes.
You don’t have to update your wardrobe by buying new pieces. Instead, stick to the pieces that you already love to wear and just make them different each time by doing some simple tweaks.
2. Maximize your wardrobe
With every piece of clothing in our wardrobe, it is important to figure out the maximum ways in which we can style those pieces. So, for example, if you have a certain blazer, try to create lots of different outfits that you can wear it with.
Also, think about what tones the blazer works best with. You want to get maximum versatility out of your pieces.
3. Work on your basics
The next tip is to go over all of your basics and separate them from the rest of the clothes in your wardrobe. Our basics are the core of our wardrobe, and we need to display them in a way that we can easily see them.
When your basics are easily accessible, it makes it so much easier to put outfits together in the morning. I personally have a lot of basic pieces in light, pastel, and neutral tones as they go perfectly with each other.
After reorganizing your wardrobe, you might even be surprised how many style combinations you were missing out on simply because you hadn’t tried putting different things together.
4. Work with your hero pieces
Let’s not forget about our hero pieces. Here, I’m talking about the more statement pieces, whether they be sparkly, sequined, lace, leather, or any other stand-out material.
These hero pieces will turn your whole outfit into something special, and just like a superhero, when you’re not sure what to wear, these pieces can save the day. So again, you need to gather all these pieces, go over them, and figure out how to style them.
Here I’m wearing a white sequined top that instantly elevated the black pants that I’ve paired it with. This would be a perfect outfit to wear for getting drinks after work.
5. Reorganize your wardrobe
Let’s be real, you can’t do a real wardrobe update without a bit of wardrobe reorganization, and that is really important because our wardrobes can get a little messy. Sometimes some really good pieces can just get lost in the mix, and we forget about them.
In the process of giving your wardrobe a good tidy, you might just rediscover pieces that you’d completely forgotten about. As I already mentioned, putting outfits together is so much easier when everything is neat and organized.
It's especially important to reorganize your wardrobe at the turn of each season when you’ll be wearing different things due to the changing weather.
6. Stay true to yourself
Lastly, wear things that make you feel confident. Don’t compare yourself too much to other people and what they are wearing; as long as you are wearing clothes that suit you and make you feel good, that’s all that matters.
