How to Layer in Winter

I’m from Iowa so I know how brutally cold the winter can be. Being the fashion lover that I am, I want to look cute no matter the weather. I have put together some tips that will help you layer up against the cold, without losing your style.
Layer over a dress
This dress that I am wearing is gorgeous, but it’s more suited for the fall. To make it work for winter, I started by layering underneath with a pair of tights. I chose these black tights but nude works with grey as well.
Adding extra layers is important in winter, so I added this black coat and a pair of boots. The coat can be left open or tied closed.
Layer over a turtleneck and leggings
Often in winter, I like to have a black turtleneck as my base layer. Here I have left the tights on and layered over them with a pair of leggings.
When I wear leggings, I usually like to wear something long over them. Here I layered with a shawl cardigan. To make the look more fitted, I cinched in my waist with a belt. I also added a pair of black, heeled boots to this look.
I love wearing an oversized, graphic tee over my turtleneck and legging base. I like to add a bit of a chunkier boot to looks like this.
To add warmth, I usually throw on an oversized knit.
The knit works really well with a heeled boot as well! As you can see, there is so much you can do with a base layer of a turtleneck and leggings.
Layer your bottoms
For those really cold days, you can always layer tights, leggings, and jeans and no one would ever know. These moon boots are great and really work with so many winter outfits! You can add any jacket or coat to a base look like this one!
Here, I switched out the moon boots for this black and white pair of knee-high boots. I layered with this black coat. I love the faux fur on the coat because it adds an extra bit of interest to the whole outfit.
Accessorize
Hats not only help keep you warm but they are a great way to elevate an outfit!
You can also wear a faux fur headband with this look.
Layer with a different top
Going in a totally different direction, in this look, I layered a silk camisole over the black turtleneck. This is a really nice way of layering to look a little more elegant and put together. I hope you enjoyed learning how to layer in winter! What is your favorite layering tip? Share in the comments!
