I’m going to show you how to take flannel fabric squares and turn them into reusable cosmetic wipes.

There’s no need to buy disposable wipes, spending money and creating waste.

All you need is some flannelette to do some sustainable sewing and create these DIY makeup wipes.

Tools and materials:

  • Flannelette
  • Scissors
  • Sewing machine

1. Cut 2-inch squares

Cut yourself a stack of 2-inch squares of flannelette. As a beginner sewer, this project will help you with some new skills.

You’ll learn how to finish edges with a zigzag stitch. You’ll also learn how to pivot around corners.

2. Zigzag stitching and pivoting around corners

Take two layers of flannelette and sew them together with a zigzag stitch. Set your machine to zigzag with 3 length and 3 width.

Start from one corner and sew the layers together with the zigzag stitch.

The stitch should go right along the edge of the fabric with your needle going back and forth on and off the fabric.

You’ll start with a couple of back tack stitches and then continue.

When you get to the first corner, leave the needle down, lift the presser foot, and rotate the fabric to continue stitching the next edge.

3. Finishing up

Repeat until you get to the last edge. Finish the end with a couple of back tack stitches.

Now, even if your only sewing skill is zigzagging edges, you can already make nice and practical reusable makeup wipes for yourself. These also make great gifts.

To wash, simply throw them in the wash inside a mesh bag.
