How to Make an Effective DIY Onion Oil For Hair Growth
In this tutorial, I’m going to show you guys how to make onion oil. The great thing about this oil is that you have ingredients right in your kitchen, so you can make it anymore.
All you need is an onion, coconut oil, and some essential oils to kill the smell. First, I’m going to show you how to make onion oil for hair growth and then I’m going to get into the benefits of onion oil. Let’s get started!
Best coconut oil!

How to make onion oil
1. Prep your onion
Start by cutting the ends off of a medium onion and then peel off the first layer.
Then, cut and dice your onion because we’re going to need to blend it.
2. Prep your coconut oil
Scoop out three tablespoons of coconut oil and then pop it into the microwave for 30 seconds to melt it down.
3. Blend
Add all of the cut onions and the coconut oil, leaving a little bit for later, to the blender.
Blend until you have a very thick, pasty texture like this.
4. Fry
Add the leftover coconut oil to a pan and fry the onion paste over low heat for about 15 minutes. Keep mixing so it doesn’t burn underneath. You’ll want to mix until it gets to a kind of brown color.
5. Filter
Place a cheesecloth over a bowl and put the onion paste on the cloth. We’re going to use this to squeeze out all of the oil which is going to be our onion hair oil.
This onion oil nourishes your scalp, helps improve blood circulation and ensures thicker and stronger hair.
Squeeze out all of the oil that’s in it. The reason we’re using the cheesecloth is because we don’t want any residue in the oil.
6. Add essential oil
To finish the oil, add a few drops of essential oil to your mixture. I like to use juniper berry, peppermint, or tea tree oil because it helps kill the scent of the onion.
I don’t recommend using any fruity sort of essential oils because they might not be strong enough to cover the onion.
7. Bottle
Store your oil in a little container and you’re done!
Benefits of onion oil
Onion oil is really high in sulfur and that means you can use it to treat bald patches or thinning hair. This is a great oil to add to your hair routine because it really does help and I swear by it.
Another tip for people who have thinning hair is to make sure you’re not stripping it a lot, so that means less shampooing and more conditioning and making sure your hair has plenty of nutrients.
How to apply onion oil to hair
When applying the oil, you want to apply it to your hair right before washing. If you’re using it as a hair growth remedy, apply it to your scalp before a hot oil treatment as this will treat your scalp and the hair follicles.
Alternatively, if you already have an onion spray, you can use the oil as a hot oil treatment. To do this, apply as-is without and just wear a plastic cap overnight and wash it off the next day. That’s how I prefer to use it.

Because of the sulfur, this onion oil helps balance the pH levels in your hair and can be super beneficial to your hair. This oil made my hair stronger, and thicker, and gave it added volume.
