Let’s get this Starlight costume DIY underway!

Tools and materials:

  • Zipper
  • Gold leather
  • Gold fabric
  • White oversized t-shirt
  • Sewing machine
  • Thread
  • Scissors
  • Elastic
  • Pins
  • Gold gloves
  • Gold paint
  • Gold belt
  • Fabric glue
  • Hot glue gun
  • Self-adhesive Velcro
Pinning the zipper ready to sew

1. Sew the zipper

Pin the zipper in the center-front of your oversized white t-shirt and sew to secure. Ensure that you’re only stitching it through the front layer.

Cutting the t-shirt along the zipper

Then, cut the t-shirt open along the zipper

Removing the sleeves on the t-shirt

2. Modify the t-shirt

Trim off the sleeves with a pair of scissors or rotary cutter.

Folding the t-shirt to keep it symmetrical

To keep everything symmetrical, fold your t-shirt in half and copy the cut-line from the first sleeve.

Removing the back panel

Remove the back panel. The aim is to create a halter-top effect for this starlight Halloween costume.

Creating a halter top effect

Leave the collar of the t-shirt attached.

How to make the collar fit

If the collar is a bit wide, trim it in half. Roll in the edges and stitch to secure.

Sewing the ends of the collar together

Then, stitch the short ends of the collar together to create a halter top effect.

Sewing a Starlight costume

Finish the back of the halter top by stitching in a piece of elastic. Fold the raw edges over the elastic to create a casing. Use a zigzag stitch to keep the stretch in the fabric.

Creating the bottom of the Starlight costume

3. Create the bottom

Cut one side of the bottom part of the t-shirt as shown.

Folding and cutting the t-shirt fabric

Fold the t-shirt over and follow the existing line of the section you already cut, to cut out the other side.

Create two side panels with the gold fabric. Basically, cut it out to the shape of the bottom side of the t-shirt.

Securing the gold fabric with fabric glue

Place the panels on either side of the bottom half, as shown. I used fabric glue to secure it in place since stitching this type of fabric was a nightmare.

Closing up the bottom of the bodysuit

Now, close up the bottom of the bodysuit with a simple stitch.

Gold strips for the zipper

4. Cover the zipper area

Cut two long pieces to glue alongside the seam of where the zipper is attached to the t-shirt. This will cover up the raw edge and give it a nice finish.

Gluing the pieces to the zipper

Again, I glued on the pieces.

Sewing elastic into the DIY Starlight costume

5. Add elastic

Sew elastic right underneath the bust area, all around the bodysuit, on the right side of the fabric.

Painting the elastic with gold paint

Paint the top and bottom elastics with gold paint to give your Starlight cosplay costume a dazzling feel.

Painting gold stars on the Starlight costume

Then, paint two gold stars on either side of the Starlight costume.

Making a gold belt for the Starlight costume

6. Make the belt

Cut the short ends of the gold belt at an angle.

Triangle gold belt for the Starlight costume

Cut an additional two pieces to create a big, wide triangle that will be placed at the opening of the belt.

Gluing the ends of the gold belt

Now, attach the short ends of the belt over top the smaller pieces with hot glue.

Using self-adhesive Velcro on the belt

Use self-adhesive Velcro on one side of the belt so that you can open and secure it without hassle.

Making gold boots out of fabric

7. Make gold boots

If you have extra gold fabric, go ahead and wrap them around your legs. These will appear as gold boots.
