In this tutorial, I will show you how to make a gorgeous halter scarf dress. This can work as a casual summer dress or a fancy cocktail dress. And it’s really simple to make with unlimited color and pattern combination options. Are you excited? Then let’s get started!

Tools and materials:

  • 2 large square scarves (not see-through!)
  • Thread
  • Sewing elastic
  • Sewing machine
Holding scarves up to the bottom to check the length

1. Determine your V-neck length

Hold your two scarves up to your body, with corners positioned just below your collarbone. Determine how far down you want the V-neckline to come and mark that position.

2. Sew your scarves together

With right sides facing, so the front center seam of your scarf dress from the V-neckline mark to the hem.

3. Sew the back seam

Hold your dress in place on your body and wrap the scarves around to your back. Pinch the scarves together where they meet at your back.

Sew the back center seam from the point where the fabric meets at your back, down to the hem.

My scarves weren’t exactly the same size, so I sewed down to the hem of the shorter scarf and then continued to sew the remainder of the side of the larger scarf to the hem of the short scarf. No fabric was cut!

4. Make straps for your scarf dress

You can make fabric straps if you wish, but I chose to just use elastic for my straps. Measure the length of strap you need and cut two equal lengths of elastic to that size. Stitch one end of each elastic to each V-neck point on your dress, on the wrong side of the dress.

Tie the straps at the back of your neck. You can wear this scarf dress loose or spice it up with a belt. And if you do have see-through scarves you want to use, make up this scarf dress for a beach cover-up!

I hope you make one of these halter scarf dresses for yourself and leave a comment to tell me how you like it.
